  • cupidsbow: "Let me show you my fannish entitlement" by cupidsbow - But why, why, why is it so fucking outrageous for us to have strong, stupid and/or outspoken opinions about canon and fanworks? Why does expressing those opinions make us "entitled"? -

  • ithiliana: Protest art, Fandom, and NOT being homogeneous - One reason why I love Alchemia's art so much is the way in which it totally parodies key elements of THE INCREDIBLY BADLY WRITTEN INTRUSIVE TRIGGERING HORRENDOUS SURVEY, not to mention some of Ogi's lovely lovely commentary about people he stereotypes and marginalizes and dismisses -

  • zvi: Signalboost - The problem I have is that people in fandom (as demonstrated to me by the links on my d-roll or in comments that I have seen) are celebrating depictions of these guys as 'sexual deviants', in a way that makes me think the external deviance is meant to symbolize their internal moral failing. -

  • darkrose: Inversion and Parody - It would be one thing if fandom as an entity (which is problematic to start with, granted) thought that cross-dressing tentacle porn was something to be ashamed of. But I don't--or I wouldn't write it, or read it. Ogi and Sai are the ones who came into our space and told us that we should feel ashamed of our kinks and our fantasies; instead of internalizing that, we're turning it back on them and saying, "We're not ashamed--why do you think we should be?" -

  • kanata: Ogi/Sai - Here's how I read the fanworks coming out of this. I didn't see the fics and art being about humiliation at all. My understanding of the reason for writing fic was not to humiliate these guys but as an illustration of what fandom always does when things frustrate us. Favorite character dies on your show? Write fic! Don't like the way the show is going? Write fic! So in these situations when I see fic and art coming out of them (there was fic for strikethrough and fanlib as well, though they obviously are not individual people), it just reads like fandom saying let's make the best of a bad situation and create fanworks for it, yay! I wasn't reading it in the context of bashing a character, but rather humanising them. -

  • shaggirl: I was wrong. - I am trying not to regret working with them. They were going to write this book with or without my help and if it contains no appreciation or understanding of fandom, it will not be for lack of effort. -

  • bluefall: i should get one of those "fandom is my fandom" icons - So I'm thinking about the fandom nature/nurture question tonight. See all fandoms have their local quirks, certain tropes or moods or writing tics that pop up all over the fanwork milieu like some kind of meta-fanon. [...] If a fandom is born from its source material, it only makes sense that it grow up to resemble it. On the other hand, some of it's gotta be nurture. -

  • sohotrightnow: Your music is bad and you should feel bad! - I have no problem with RPF, fic or art. I have a problem with the fact that people are creating these things with the intention of maliciously shoving them in the subjects' faces, specifically for the purpose of humiliating them. There's been a lot of really intelligent discussion in this mess, and that we feel the need to undercut it with crap like this really disturbs me. -

  • daedala: SurveyFail and Cultural Appropriation - If anyone in fandom ever wonders again what is the matter with cultural appropriation? This. Is. It.We have outsiders, coming to fandom and viewing it under a microscope, from a privileged viewpoint; relating everything about the fannish other to their privileged lens; taking things out of context; taking their own unmarked privilege as the Natural State of Humankind; using shoddy science and shoddy research and shoddy thinking to justify treating fans as somehow less than them; and doing all this for fame and profit. -

  • greenlady2 [in slash_pov]: Dark Fic and Slash... - [...] there seems to be more truly violent Dark Fic in Slash fan fiction than there is in gen or het. I'm wondering if fans believe the Slash aspect justifies horrific violence. She thinks perhaps that writers, and maybe readers, use Slash as a way to distance themselves from violent fantasies. We put ourselves into a male persona, thus removing ourselves from any blame for our fantasies. -

  • bossymarmalade: Recent Entries - I called the Boston University IRB office. The direct approach works.

They've gotten a lot of emails regarding Dr. Ogas. He is no longer in any way affiliated with Boston University, except as a recent graduate. They have asked him to stop using his official Boston University email address in connection with this project, or his website. He is officially on his own, and this project is NOT IRB APPROVED.

  • thingswithwings: no, I'm not posting fic - you can relax! - Like, seriously, it sounds so ridiculous when people feel the need to preface the comment with "HEY GUYS I DON'T LIKE WATERSPORTS, PLEASE DON'T THINK I DO" as if to preemptively defend themselves against all passersby, and PS it sort of shames the author and anyone passing by who genuinely likes that kink even as it pretends to be praise. -

  • rivkat: Discipline and publish - I still think this is a mistake, because IRBs use the very same totalizing, naturalizing models of personhood, risk, and harm that the original kink_bingo response so powerfully deconstructed. Fans can assert the entitlement to be disciplined only on their own terms, and I think we should, but the IRB move goes against that commitment. -

  • shaggirl: Aftermath - The days of our flying under the radar are long gone, I am sorry to say. We are out in the wide, wide open here, and research is going to happen whether we participate or not. I would rather do my best to help correct faulty assumptions at the outset than allow them to be nurtured through the entirety of a project. -
