malkingrey: Such Stuff as Dreams are Made on.... - I can't help feeling, though, that this time may be different. Fandom is accustomed to being jerked around by whichever larger entity owns the field where we've occupied a small corner to pitch our tents and play our games, but there seems to be an increasing willingness to think about having a field of our own instead of a share-on-sufferance of someone else's. -
slashpine: Meta with recs: There's "slash" & there's *slash*. I want *that* one - Slash is the opposite of boys mocking each other as "gay". It's the opposite of men taunting each other to "man up," of having so much intolerance for anyone who doesn't fit this narrow, stereotyped male script that some boys commit suicide, while others start using guns. With slash, we rewrite that script for being male. But why are we rewriting the *mens* script, not the womens? Sadly, I think it seems easier to get men to be nice ordinary emotionally open human beings, than to get women into the greater strength and powerful sense of self that will let them stop being defined solely as sextoys, housekeepers, or hags. -
jiggery_pokery: Why I love Dreamwidth even before I have an account there, and why you might not - Dreamwidth looks like it has the sort of momentum in its development and in its nascent culture that it may be as exciting to be a Dreamwidth member as it ever was to be a LiveJournal member, even at LiveJournal's peak. In short, I consider Dreamwidth to be cool in a way that I haven't felt for any other communication platform for the last few years. -
lizbee: Circles and circles and circles again (Or, 1:20am is no time to have thinky thoughts) - How do you decide whether or not to grant access in addition to subscribing to their journal? Is it appropriate to grant someone access without subscribing? When subscribing to a stranger's LJ, do you grant them access, or is that a step to be taken at a later date? How do you decide when you're ready to grant access? Why does this series of questions sound like the sex queries in Dolly magazine? -
seperis: fandom and migration - I don't know if anyone would be all that interested at this date, but I did a few meta posts in 2003 right after I came to LJ (Novmeber 2002) about the transition between mailing lists and LJ (and in fact, I was usenet in 1999, so I was in the last three major jumps). For some people who have expereinced fandom only as LJ, I think this entire thing may be kind of bizarre and a little frightening, which yes, it is. -
