  • giandujakiss: So I'm working on this vid.... - ...except it suddenly occurred to me that the concept is uncomfortably similar to another vid I already made a while ago. -

  • [info]sartorias: Transformative - There is some further debate about the legitimacy of fanfiction going around. I don't mean the copyright issue (which is vexing indeed) but its legitimacy as literature. . . . Like published literature, fanfiction has its bad and brilliant, its phatic and its experimental. It also has its editors (called beta readers, and these betas can be far more ruthless than many overworked editors these days), and its dependence on word of mouth completely cuts out the "packaged best seller" aspect of the publishing world.

Anyway, I also think that many who say that fanfiction is "all just porn using someone else's characters" and badly written could use some pointers to the good stuff--though I'm aware that tastes differ. So I'm hoping that anyone who cruises by here who has some transformative favorites will provide links to their own favorites, so that a spectrum might be offered.

  • [info]zinke: Because I am apparently not the only one having thinky-thoughts about the rise and fall of fandoms. - I guess the larger question I’m trying to get at is this: why do some fandoms such as SG1 continue to flourish long after its show has ended while others like BSG seem to fade away (or go out in a wanky blaze of glory)? Is it because the show is able to live on in another form (movies, books, etc.)? Does fan opinion/reaction to the way the show ended (or the way a favorite character or ‘ship ended) have an impact? -

  • [info]rm: "normal stories" vs. slash - Look, when you say someone writes "both normal stories and slash" you are being offensive. -

  • [info]trobadora: Meta: Cara Mason and the Bisexual Paradox - Bi or omni; not straight but also not gay or lesbian. Look at this: as soon as such a character has been established as bisexual or omnisexual, at least a significant section of fandom starts resenting anything that depicts them in a relationship with someone of the opposite gender. There's a palpable sense of betrayal when a bi or omni character is shown having meaningful opposite-sex relationships. -

  • [info]stirring_still: [in doctorwho] Where's my Queer Who at? - One of the things I've enjoyed most about New Who is that it's widened the scope of the media landscape by normalising sexualities other than heterosexuality. The very first episode has the line "That'll never work. He's gay and she's an alien," and the series kinda... went from there. // Yet in the new series, has there been anything? Anything at all? -

  • damned_colonial: Body image and geek gatherings... summary of results - a few summaries of the stats and some discussion points from the recent poll on body image and RL geek gatherings. -

  • silver_spotted: [in writingthewall] This thing that we’re doing - So how do you characterize RPF? Not by definition, but by how you think to yourself about what you are doing when you read/write RPF. -

  • [dreamwidth.org profile] copperbadge: SO! I HAVE ARRIVED. I always experience - See, the thing is, you don't have to fight on behalf of fanfic -- just by thinking independently and having an opinion, you've already won. Which is kind of awesome, really. So the decision you're faced with is not whether to fight about it, but whether to respect an author's foolish, fearful wish and not post it, or publish and be damned. -

  • [info]asimaiyat: Writing about polyamory in fandom -- a meta post that I am super nervous about posting. - One thing I've heard a lot is people admitting that they're trying to do the best they can to write about poly relationships, but they don't have much real-world knowledge of polyamory -- they've never been in a poly relationship, known anyone who was (to their knowledge), etc. So I thought I'd put together a meta post to offer the perspective of a poly person in fandom. This IS NOT meant as criticism of any fic or other fanwork I've encountered; I had the idea to write it based on conversations with other fans. Also I am super nervous and am actually kind of te -

  • [dreamwidth.org profile] my_daroga: Hollywood RPF - Last year, while exploring a warren of a used bookstore in Kutztown, PA, I came across two volumes of Hollywood RPF. Two flaking, bound volumes from 1942-43: -
