  • jmfrey (in swirlygate): Gender and Genre Prejudices in the Cancellation of "Stargate: Atlantis": A Case Study - Three factors went into this loss of audience... the lack of strong, independent female characters with significant back story and inclusion in the action; the lack of consistent characterization and the removal (killing or writing off) of central characters in a professed effort to centralize female characters by including new female characters[1] rather than making existing and already-fan-loved characters more centralized or developing their character arcs or backstories; and the deliberate cancellation of a series featuring characters with which their current audience related in favour of younger, 'hipper', even more gender stereotyped characters.... -
