  • forthwritten: steampunk: my issues, let me show you them - In celebrating the figure of the adventurer and explorer, steampunk buys into certain assumptions. One: that there are places to explore and discover - the idea that a land can only be discovered by your culture, and has been previously unexplored even if people have been living there for centuries. -

  • naraht: Steampunk redux - Deep down, or perhaps not so deep down, there's a sense in steampunk that having an empire must after all have been rather fun. Perhaps for a few it was. And somehow people are still being persuaded to join in the fantasy that they would have been one of the privileged few. -

  • [info]pandarus: Words, Words, Words - 'Cause I am presently coming up against the belief that Slash stories are inherently more sexual than Het stories, and it is boggling my mind. That a story could still be considered Gen if it happened to tangentially mention, say, Buffy/Giles just in passing, but that if the same story instead mentioned Buffy/Faith in exactly the same manner it would be considered Slash.//I am trying to parse this in a way that is not, essentially "Gayness = Teh Sexin'! Ew!", and that does not smack of homophobia. But I'm finding it quite difficult. -

  • [info]troubleinchina: Fandom & Disability: Joan of Arcadia - This what portraying disability in a "positive" light looks like to me. Making Kevin totally cool with everything that had happened, ignoring the way that families heal after sudden and unexpected changes, would be dismissing the realities of so many people. -
