glass_icarus: on yuletide - Obviously, the parameters of Yuletide are the sole decision of the mods, but in my opinion it would be to everyone's benefit to have a clear outline of what the parameters are, if only so we can make informed decisions about whether or not this challenge is for us. -
bossymarmalade: jimmy stewart as a puppet is just wrong - I've been doing Yuletide since it started and look forward to it a lot every year. Many people do (three thousand, as I was told). But there's also a lot of brainstorming that people have been doing in terms of an alternative that I am loathe to just forget or shove at the Yuletide mods in the hope that they'd have the time/inclination to address it. -
dhobikikutti: Yuletide, AO3 and me - As someone whose been on the fringes of fandom, with a whole lot of niche communities that are challenge to get some interest in, I have to say that I am grateful to the larger fannish institutions that make what I want to do easier, even as I support pushing for sustainable change in them (and of course, stepping away from them when compromising becomes painful). -
franzeska: The Highlight of the Fannish Year - That's what actually drives me nuts about yuletide and AO3 criticism. It's not when people say they're not interested or when they say they don't like high-profile projects or when they say they dislike specific people and those people have turned them off: It's when they dismiss somebody's hard work by saying that they themselves aren't enough of a BNF or don't have the skills to create what they want. You don't have to be a BNF and no one is born knowing how to code. -
ignaz: Yuletide fuckery, version 2010 - So for this year's Yuletide, a celebration of rare and obscure fandoms, Ryan/Simon, as a part of American Idol, is ineligible--but you can request and write Cook/Archuleta and Kradam to your heart's content. That is, if the tens of thousands of Kradam stories already out there aren't enough for you. -
troisroyaumes: Yuletide rant repost - I think I personally wouldn't feel so frustrated if I didn't feel that I had been making a lot of effort to give all these spaces dominated by Western media fandoms a chance. A lot of people I know in anime/manga fandoms--including many of my oldest fandom friends--just write off places like AO3, OTW, Yuletide, [community profile] metafandom, Dreamwidth, etc. because of the perception that they're not really for anime/manga fans. Then they get told that they need to participate in order to increase their representation in these spaces. But why should they when the people who do participate end up feeling excluded all over again? -
ellen_fremedon: I've said this in a couple of places today - We haven't seen the official sign-up list yet. The preliminary results are undergoing manual correction. Many of the large fandoms may yet be disqualified. And if they're not-- as the mods have said they might not be, and have further said they are not worrying about much-- if a large, thriving, in-no-way-rare fandom does get into Yuletide, and gets requested and written--Then someone has received a lovely gift. That's the downside. That's the horrible outcome. And, seriously, how is that a problem? -
karathephantom: So. Time to rant. - I'm sick of having to lie about or hide how old I am in order to be taken seriously. No one (whom I choose to interact with) would claim that my gender or sexual orientation make me less qualified to fully engage with fandom or the progressive blogosphere or any other area of the internet. Age is another story. When jokes, insults, and stereotypes describing petty or ignorant people as being "like a twelve year old" are still common, twelve year olds don't feel welcome, even if they have something to contribute. -
