fan_eunice: Serious parts of the discussion aside - Serious parts of the discussion aside, there seems to be some confusion as to what exactly Vividcon is and what goes on there. So I thought I'd share my description of what Vividcon is generally like and what happens once you're there in terms of purpose and programming. -
mrv3000: On OTP-ism. - I don't find it particularly juvenile that I generally only ship one pairing, but yet I see so many comments that indicate as much. That somehow a person is enlightened if they can multi-ship (or really enlightened if they like threesomes or more) and some sort of idiot fangirl if they OTP. -
musesfool: i am human and i need to be loved - The thing is, at a certain point (usually when more than two people are involved), it stops being a discussion and becomes many groups of people digging in and setting up fortifications as everyone attributes the most extreme position of each argument to each person or group who doesn't subscribe 100% to their own opinion on the topic. -
marina: Where procrastination leads you - It always gets my hackles up when people talk about how we should behave on the internet as if there is some universal understanding of what's nice and what's naughty, what's respectful and what's disrespectful, and what is morally just. Let's talk about systems, and how they operate, and avoid universal codes of conduct (until such time as we establish a truly independent fandom culture, at least). -
legionseagle: I, personally, warn for unreliable narrators - as a side-effect of the discussion I have seen at least three separate formulations of "What makes a warning necessary/advisable" and since I think each formulation has separate consequences and implications, particularly in relation to freedom of speech issues, I wondered whether a little time spent trying to unpack the different nuances might be helpful and might perhaps help explain my position with regard to warnings -
seperis: so the history of warnings 101, continued - the new (and much better) reasons for warnings are not incompatible with avoiding the historical (and in some fandoms, current) use of warnings as social control. We can do both, and from what I'm reading, we can do it in a way that satisfies vidders that warnings will not be used for specific institutional exclusionary purposes, only personal use. -
commodorified" A brief note on trigger warnings - There is an argument that the message of a shocking/triggering story or vid or image can be so important that people need to see it.To which I say "Um." And also: generally speaking, if a person has sufficient experience of X that X is a trigger for them, they probably already know all they need to know about X and your piece, however brilliant, is unlikely to expand their horizons. -
giandujakiss: There is no etcetera - Maybe I'm wrong about this, but my perception is that for this community, it's about sexual assault. And possibly self-harm. I have no doubt that people in the community have other specific triggers - I saw someone post about one in particular - but the common triggers here, the ones that (a) don't come up with such frequency that a warning would be functionally useless because it would touch 90% of the vids; and (b) are likely to be relatively common within this community, seem to be sexual assault, and possibly self-harm. -
ranalore: food labels, vid labels, and accessibility - I personally realize that any labelling system instituted for vids in general, or Vividcon in particular, will of necessity indicate variable things to variable people. That said, I still think such an explicit labelling system would be of use, particularly when contrasted with the nearly complete lack of such a system. -
hazelk: Notes to self: vid warnings at VVC - People at risk of being triggered by vids and requesting warnings are grown ups. They are perfectly aware that vidder or VVC or VJ supplied summaries of potentially triggering content are just someone else’s judgements. They don’t guarantee safety but they would make the con more navigable and feel more hospitable. -
thuviaptarth: More accessibility questions - arduinna has breakdowns for how she'd warn for vids in Premieres 2009 and vids voluntarily labeled by vidders for 2010. My breakdowns for the same vids are kinda different. So it seems like some clarification is in order, and I'd love to get some more details if people feel comfortable providing them -
impertinence: this is not a furious screed; it is a constructive post - Every time warnings are discussed, people say something along the lines of, "How do these people even read books/watch TV/go outside?" To be completely honest, the question has always struck me as pretty condescending - but I suspect answering it might actually illuminate why so many people consider warnings an accessibility issue. Because the answer to the question, regardless of the action described, is: carefully, and not without some risk. -
astolat: vividcon open policy discussion, just a general note - The reality is there are some points on both sides here that cannot be reconciled, and in the end, the concom will have to make a decision that will inevitably make some people unhappy. -
lightgetsin: Ablism bingo: when you fail, you win! - “You’re ruining the con!” and “you’re ruining fandom!” – Yes, it’s awful that people have spoken up about how the previous system was constructed on an ablest paradigm and now you might be expected to change your behavior. *pats*. -
merlin_femslash: !MOD POST [please PM a mod if you cannot view, it concerns the 18+ ~situation~] - Some of you may have noticed that the comm has recently swapped to "explicit adult content" as the default for all entries, meaning that anyone not over 18 cannot view the content of this community[...]//The mod team here would like to inform you all that this was NOT our decision, and has not been done by us. -
ineptshieldmaid: In which LJ are fuckers. AGAIN. - Recently, LJ unilaterally and without communicating with the community maintainers, set the ratings of merlinfemslash, merlinxarthur and merlinslash to 18+. Merlin_femslash reported on this yesterday; apparently some other fandom and bandom communities were also locked. So far as we can tell, only slash and femslash communities have been subject to this treatment. -
smirnoffmule: Pascal's Wager for Trans Allies - referencing the "disproportionate" number of FtMs in fandom is as meaningless as going along to Crufts and talking about the disproportionate number of dog owners you'll find there. Fandom isn't a random population sampling, fandom is a self-selecting group. -
eumelia: [Holocaust Fic!Fail] Sometimes... is it even worth it? - But you know why I really take the time to give a damn and cracks my heart wide open? Beyond it being the right thing to do and being in an ethically sound position.//I want to be safe. -
harumi: Racebending publicity - I want to speak out. So I'm glad that A:TLA is failing, and I'm glad that the Racebending movement is getting bigger. I hope this time Asians will finally find a voice. I'm tired of being the model minority. -
