mecurtin: Wottaguy: the general case of which Mary Sue is a subset - the literary/one-way media Wottaguy/gal is much more acceptable, moneymaking, etc. than in any interactive medium[...]Fanfic falls between the two: it's not *exactly* a multiperson game, but it's not completely one-way, either. It's sometimes directly collaborative, but always has a much closer relationship and more feedback between writer and audience that one-way media have. That means a lot of mixed feelings -- and the Mary Sue debate is *all* about mixed feelings. -
molten_ghost: The Mary Sue Question - Does no one find it odd that of all the many, many examples of poor writing found in fanfiction, Mary Sues get by far the most attention? Notice that there’s no equivalent of a Sparkleypoo comic about historical anachronisms or a litmus test for fangirl Japanese. Those issues are frequently highlighted in sporking communities, but Mary Sue is always in the forefront, the sumptuous main course to the garnish of plot holes, mischaracterization, and other trappings of either untalented or inexperienced authors. What’s fandom’s obsession with simultaneously shaking their fist at her and jamming her where she doesn’t belong? -
fan_eunice: Icon used ironically. - The vid does not have to come out perfect, or even very good really, to get the joy of making a vid out of the experience. That part is private. It's for you. And while I would certainly encourage anyone who wants to be serious about it as a craft and art to invest in learning an NLE and to dig into editing and theory and all that jazz, there is NOTHING WRONG with dumping some clips into WMM or iMovie and seeing how they look to that song you heard on the radio that is just perfect for X. -
deepad: An Open Letter to Charles Tan - A friend of mine linked me to your recent essay No Foreigners Allowed, and asked me what I thought. My first response, after reading it, was to rant in rather angry and horrified capslock. This is not new or unusual, I am used to coming across some rather appalling views about cultural exchange every couple of days, and quietly critiquing those opinions with people I can trust, since I rarely find it productive to engage with strangers and tell them why I disagree with them. But although we are not acquainted, I know you as the co-editor of the World SF Blog, an informative blog I whose feed I subscribe to. And I think that as content provider of a blog that seeks to represent global voices, you should be aware of certain things that from your post, I am not sure you are. -
