Title: Being Snape
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Disclaimer: The Harry Potter world and characters are the sole property of J.K. Rowling, Scholastic, Bloomsbury, and Raincoast Books, and Warner Bros., Inc. I make no money from writing fanfiction.
Summary: When Harry Polyjuices into Snape, he finds out more about the Potions master than he ever dreamed.
Warnings: Major spoilers for DH, mention of het relationship (not explicit)
Author's notes: Thank you to my two terrific betas!
Regan_V, you asked for (and I hope that I have given you) canon compliance, dubious loyalties, dirty talk, morally dubious situations and homophobia in the Wizarding World. Most of all, the story explores the issues of adultery and sacrifice. I hope that you enjoy it.

Oh my!

This was astoundingly well done. I love the detail and the richness and the hot, hot sex.

And Snape's no fool. He's hanging about watching, and I expect that Harry's going to get some memories back after Lily leaves for school. ;-)

That was an incredible ride. I love that Severus ends up doing the noble thing for the sake of Harry's kids. As much as I have tears in my eyes, I'm imagining a happy ending somewhere down the road.

What a well-done story, and what an amazingly good use of Potterverse magic! The polyjuice scenes were amazing. I loved it when Harry Obliviated his mirror. I bet that [info]regan_v likes that ending. ;) Noble, romantic Snape with his huge schlong--mmmmm. Yum.

This is a fabulous story, but so sad for someone who likes happy endings (like me ;-) ), but very well done for someone who isn't so needy. I think [info]regan_v will like this story very much.

Great work; now I'm off to make up a nice little epilogue in my head, set in a few years' time, where Harry's children are off his hands, and he and Mr Smith can meet up again. ;D

Amazing story. I felt like the infidelity was handled extremely well, especially I think since it's so established that the homophobia is commonplace and so Ginny comes off more as ignorant than anything. I think this is now going into my personal canon. Way to fix that epilogue!

Oh, you had me at the title. And the headers, which hit every desire I have for a Snape story dead-on. But then? It just got better, and better, and better.

I kept stopping after finishing a scene, making myself go and do something else, before returning to read more. Because I simply couldn't bear for this story to end.

Mystery author, I can't possibly make you feel as happy as your story has made me. But I'm going to try my best.

*takes a breath*

Holy Mother of God, I loved this story. I'm thinking that you must be not only on my flist, but on some of my smaller filters, because you work in so many references to things I like or even cherish. Truly, this story has everything: a complex, intelligent, angsty plot, superb characterization, original use of magic, phrasing so perfect that I occasionally caught my breath, and wicked clever little exchanges like this one:

"That was fun, dear."

"Shut up. Obliviate," Harry said, and left the bathroom

He Obliviates his own damn mirror. Jesus on toast, how much do I love this Harry! He knows where this is leading, and can't stop himself. He thinks he'll come up with something to save the day, heh. You reckless Gryfindor, addicted to bravery and getting through on sheer guts. Oh, it doesn't always work that way, Harry.

And yet, you're spot-on there: I am sure that canon Harry became addicted, by the end, to the rush and crystal-sharp certainties that danger and a struggle against a moral evil can bring. And then, in peacetime, he is driven to recreate those feelings again.

And ahhhhhh, the steady, mounting obsession with every detail of Snape's body. Yessssss, this is the sort of detail I was hoping for: a persuasive dissection of one of the many avenues that polyjuice (and other sorts of sex magic) might open up for those who used them.

And the juxtaposition with the mundane, tedious tasks of daily domesticity and childrearing: oh, so perfect.

In the final analysis---as the title foreshadows---this story's premise is almost epistemological, forcing Harry (and the reader) to consider and reconsider how he knows what he knows, and what the nature of identity is. I was enraptured by the complexities here.

"You have to believe in something," Harry said, "And I believe in you."

Oh, Harry. *tears up* Yes, of course. For you it truly is that simple. This moment-which Harry has been working towards for the whole story---is such a jewel of characterization that I choked up.

Your Snape is also simply a triumph, in that confrontation after Harry's figured it out, and goes to see him in the inn: most truly himself without a single one of the canon/fanon markers of personality and identity: eyes, hair, voice. Rather, you convey the essentials of how he thinks and his values without needing to fall back on a single physical marker. I am stunned.

And of course there was never a chance I could limit myself to one comment box, with this story - [info]regan_v, 2007-12-28 03:29 am UTC

Wonderful story, just wonderful. There aren't many that bring an actual smile to my face as they conclude, but this one certainly did. Harry's obsession was completely believable in its escalation. Snape was brave and noble and once again, a true hero. An "instant classic" if ever there was one, I'm sure.

Thank you.

I really liked the idea of this fic, and I loved that first bit with Harry seeing himself as Snape. Snape describing how he would have survived, if he were Severus Snape, was priceless, and the ending was sad but still wonderful. Good job!

That was amazing! As wonderful as it was to read about Harry finally being with his only obsession, the constant reminders about the family he is sacrificing gave this story the right amount of angst. Adultery stories have a tendency to gloss over the the families left behind, but you did not, which made this a perfect, yet painful, tale.
And the ending? I wasn't expecting that, but of course that's how Snape would handle this. Wonderful, wonderful story!

Wow! This was fantastic. Sad, gorgeous, clever, and happily epilogue compliant without sacrificing a damned thing of itself. This is what the epilogue makes me want. Infidelity, complications, high costs, risk, pain, need, passion, a marriage that is what Harry wants and yet not *quite* everything he needs... and a whole lot of other excellent things that made this story fantastic. Excellent, so excellent.

Oh, yeah! That's excellent. Snape would do all those things; if Harry grew up he would too. Yet he's still the old recvkless Harry, trusting to improvisation and luck. Happy Regan. Got what she wanted, and a clear-eyed look at all the implications.

I found the ending hopeful. Snape doesn't need, nowadays, to hang around protecting Harry; he's made his sacrifice for Harry's children; so why is he there, causing himself pain? Because he's still, yes, in love, and seeing Harry is worth the pain. So perhaps when Harry tries again, and finds him again, he'll have the courage to follow through, as he had the courage to withdraw.

Really intriguing and well-executed. Harry is so desperate and reckless here -- the obsession not only shines through but fairly pulses throughout the story. Snape getting drawn in, falling for Harry, showing his emotional vulnerability, and then giving Harry up? Devastating. I love that it was a not-happy ending - not unhappy precisely, because there are hints at a reunion of sorts, whatever Harry eventually is able to recollect. And the closing scene lets us see how Snape seems to feel his choice was affirmed as the right one, since Harry has been able to devote his attentions to his children in the subsequent years after their affair. But I like the bravery you displayed (you Gryffindor *g*) in writing such an emotionally wrenching fic, and closing with the two love-interests still apart from one another, yearning separately, with nothing explicitly assured. Great stuff!

Wonderful, one of the best things I've read lately. And because I'm a sucker for happy endings, this ending gives me a teeny tiny hope that maybe one time in the not so far, far away future you may continue this. A little epilogue maybe ...

Wow. This was really amazing. What a complex, beautiful, powerful story. It made me cry. I'm a sucker for angst and I never mind unhappy endings but Snape's and Harry's last talk, Snape's decision and reasons to leave Harry touched something inside me and I just couldn't hold back the tears. And then you gave us that hopeful, open ending. I'm a sucker for open endings, too. I loved the implication that Harry and Snape might meet again and maybe things would be better for them next time. It also made me think that maybe this wasn't the first time, that maybe Snape had had to Obliviate Harry before. If I'm interpreting that correctly... But I love the idea. Oh, the painful angst! :-)

I just loved how you explored the idea of such a homophobic wizarding world. Harry and Snape were just perfect. I'm so in love with your Snape. And the sex? So very hot!

Thank you for this fantastic story, mystery author. Can't wait to find out who you are!

Oh, this is excellent! i wasn't quite sold on Harry's motivations at the start, but the way he pursued the need to understand Snape was fantastic, and the progression of their relationship was perfect. Also, I'm in the camp that sees the ending as hopeful, so I'm utterly satisfied *g*

(btw...I'll be adding this story to my recs page after the reveal)

Very, very nice! I was hooked from the first scene when Harry took the potion. I wasn't sure what he was aiming for at first, but it makes so much sense as the story progressed, the obsession that couldn't be sated because Harry truly believed Snape to be dead. Snape is wonderful here. Slytherin to the core but losing Lily really did scar him for life. Not to want more children to grow up without parents -- my heart ached at the sacrifice he had to make.

Thank you for such a wonderful story! I really enjoyed reading this.
