It's a magical world, with people having power at different levels (classified as jewels), where some races are long-lived (two of the heroes are ~ 2000 yrs old) and some not (the heroine). For that matter, some characters are dead. The world has been taken over by a power-hungry witch who controls stronger witches (by having them 'broken' in their first sexual encounter) and wizards (by various means, including a sort of magical cockring, sexual slavery, corruption). Some people utterly despise these books, some are rabid fans. I enjoyed them for the story, despite the occasional excess. If you read them for the rough stuff you shouldn't go far wrong.
