Basil woke up, startled and unable to remember why. His head was full of static. His heartbeat couldn't find rhythm. Frowning, he struggled to quiet what breathing he could manage. It must have been a bad dream. Maybe it was good that he couldn't remember. It was just a dream. Or- or...
His shaking hand brushed against Susan's back. Right. Susan was here. Suddenly, Basil found the air his lungs had been missing. He closed his eyes again and took a deep breath. He wondered if it would be too selfish to wake her up and just ask her to hold his hand. It would. It would be. She had work in the morning and she wan't his personal nightlight. That's okay. He was okay now, he was fine. Alive.
The static was clearing, replaced by the smell of her shampoo and occasional flash of light from the window. Turning to face her he smiled, trailing his fingers down her arm gently. Okay.
