RP: Roger
Who: Roger Davies
Where: Hogsmeade in general
When: Friday, 4 October, 2005 -- late morning
Summary: Roger moves into Hogsmeade
The attack in Hogsmeade the weekend before had done some...interesting...things to the analysts' readings. They knew there was an attack because they picked it up just like every other attack. Problem was, they couldn't take a team in. Illusions might not fool sensors and satellites. But, Roger could hardly lead a team on an effective operation if he was the only one who could see the terrain for what it was. The techs were now considering some sort of virtual environment headsets, but those would take ages to perfect, if not straight up years.
Command wanted eyes on the ground now.
Roger wanted any other assignment possible.
But, MI96 only had one wizard and he was it.
By definition, this was a fact-finding mission. He was to stay in the village, monitor the investigation, relay any information on the Death Eaters' movements back to Command. It would be up to Command to determine if any efforts to liaise with the Ministry of Magic would move forth. Until then, Roger needed to keep his head down and 'blend in'.
Roger would have liked to really explain to his Officer Commander how easy an undercover assignment in the Wizarding world was not likely to be. But, he had his orders.
Setting up the operation had been a feat in and of itself. Roger had needed to find a job in the village that would justify moving there, a place to live, and create the backstopping necessary to conceal his involvement in 1st PARA and SAS. He accomplished all three within the week with a little help from the intelligence team.
The house was easiest. He picked one of the small, one bedroom cottages at the far end of Helga Way, there was one neighbor across the road. But, it was the farthest edge of town he could manage with a decent view of both Hogwarts across the lake and Hydra Stadium at the edge of the village. All in all, it was the best tactical location for seeing trouble at the most visible targets in the area and for getting out unseen should apparition not be an option.
The job was almost as easy. WWN's news program was hiring copy writers and their headquarters was in Hogsmeade. That made the backstopping easier. By Friday, he was fitted with a cover story showing his work as a correspondent for Reuters for the last several years, including CV, sample articles, and enough seeded bylines to pass muster, although Roger severely doubted the WWN would care much about verifying muggle references.
His reasoning for both leaving the wizarding world and for returning was simple and basically honest: he wanted no part of it after losing his mother in the last war, but as long as the Death Eaters continued to bring the war into the muggle world, this was the best way to ensure his father was not as much of a target if they came after Roger this time.
And that was that. Friday he moved in, checked in with his new boss, and by evening was settling into his new cottage to make plans and modify a few pockets with the charms that would let him carry a few supplies other than a wand. Thank God he'd been allowed the stipulation to break cover and use any necessary force should another attack occur!
