Early on in the formation of their cavern society, the Minister and her advisors had agreed to erect a magical barrier serving three purposes: to make the cave Unplottable, to repel Muggles (out of an abundance of both caution and hope), and to serve as an early detection warning should anyone come close. Despite the military training for nearly a year, those wards had never been tripped, and a need for defense never came. Until Saturday, April 6th at 4:53 am, when the lights in the cave turned red and an alarm went off in each advisor's home. The Minister and her team worked fast, and a small initial wave of soldiers was dispatched to the area where the barrier triggered by 5:15.
They were unprepared for the force that was waiting for them. Within moments of engaging, it was clear they were outmatched and struggling. A distress call was sent back, and the second wave—having been standing at the ready the whole time—arrived within minutes. A Healer tent was erected safely behind the front line when the second group joined the first, stabilizing those who had fallen initially so they could be moved to the cavern hospital before shifting focus to the freshly injured and helping those whose breathing apparatuses were running out of time.
As the sun began to rise over the battlefield almost two hours after the alarm had tripped, their opponents began disapparating with their fallen before they could be fully illuminated, oddly leaving no trace they had been there at all except for the injured cave-dwellers. Both the dead (a small group of 7) and the injured were secured and then moved to the hospital, while those who were still standing sent to debriefing before they were released to go home and rest.
