Question of the Week!
I have no time anymore.
How did your character get educated before Hogwarts? Were they taught at home, tutored, go to Muggle Primary school or something else? You can elaborate if you'd like.

Ginny never went to a Muggle Primary school, and she definitely wasn't tutored ;] Way too expensive. No, she stayed at home when she was a child, and it was seen that she'd learn life lessons from her brothers, Percy and Bill in particular. Molly didn't have that much time during the day when all of them were home, but she tried to make sure she read to Ginny and encouraged her to read along at least twice a week. Arther took it upon himself to help her learn Maths, using a multitude of Muggle books he had borrowed off a colleague (bless his little obsession). Ginny has never been too confident with Maths, and she considered taking up Arithmancy to help her with that, but decided against it. She has the basics, and that's all she thinks she needs. As for writing, Percy helped her most with that, and she also spent a lot of time watching her dad write, to pick things up. Her education growing up was never a formal or structured one; she just learnt as she went along, as best she could in a hectic household. |

Eyup, it's a Megan! She went to the local village Primary school, partly because her dad wanted her to, and partly because she needed somewhere to stay whilst her parents and gran were out (dad working, mum practising four days a week, and gran socialising). She already knew quite a bit of Welsh from her gran, but learnt a fair bit more in her Primary school, although she'd never say she's fluent in it, especially as she's forgotten a lot of it. And, despite common beliefs, Megan didn't do all that badly in school and did learn the basics :P Just not the in-depth science of a burning candle ;D |

Susan's parents were all for sending her to a little Wizarding primary school, but it was a long way off and they didn't really have the time to Floo her there before they went off to work. As Susan's mum is a Muggle-born she thought it was probably a good idea if Susan got some knowledge of the Muggle world so, as a half-blood, she could comfortably live in both worlds. And that's pretty much the way it worked out! |

Romilda was originally going to be homeschooled - well, she was going to stay at home. Whether her mother would have bothered to teach her anything is uncertain. But as it was, Romilda was such a loud, hyperactive child that her mother ended up sending her to the nearest Muggle primary school so that she could write in peace. And this is where Romilda's knowledge of boy bands and love of Muggle celebrities comes from. ;) |

As a respectable pure-blood, naturally Draco was educated at home. He had a nanny when he was younger, and sometimes Narcissa would sit and read with him. When Draco was six his father started hiring eminent and respectable (i.e. pure-blooded) tutors to teach him the three Rs. They also taught him about wizarding culture and history, the noble traditions of pure-bloods, the importance and prestige of the House of Slytherin, and - of course - how half-bloods and Muggle-borns are naturally inferior. What three Rs? Rage, iRritation and ridiculousness? :P (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

Considering she's a Muggleborn, I think it's fairly obvious that Hannah went to a Muggle Primary school. Her school was pretty focused on exams and marks, which is part of the reason she's so concerned about OWLs. However, there was also a reasonable social scene, and Hannah is still in contact with many of the friends she made in primary school -- obviously she can't send them owls or anything, but they get together during the summers and some holidays. |

Cho was tutored -- is that not the best form of early education? Spending one on one time with a tutor, as opposed to being in a primary school class or being taught by her parents who are anything but education specialists, helped Cho reach her full potential, and, admittedly, her full arrogance. Unlike Draco, however, her tutor was a half-blood and therefore not so domineering about Pureblood superiority. |

Alicia and her brother both attended Muggle Primary school, but she never really took it seriously because she knew she was a witch, so why bother learning these silly Muggle things? She picked up the basics, of course, but Alicia's never really been academically inclined in the first place, and she tended to not pay attention in class. Alicia still enjoyed school at times, though, because spending time with the other kids was a lot more fun than spending time with her boring older brother at home. |

Lil went to two muggle schools. The first one she left because she kept getting teased, the kids saying she was stupid. Tragic! The second school, she stayed in until she got that oh-so-famous letter. She still got teased, but not as much as the first school(must have been a bad town or something), and she only made two friends, although one of them thought she was really weird. Stacey is a Muggle-born, so like duh she went to Muggle primary school. She didn't enjoy it - she was held back a lot and her classmates thought she was strange (it apparently was not the best school with the best teachers), and fit much better in when she started Hogwarts. But she did ace the primary curriculum first. ^^ |

Jerome Fawcett was set to begin school in the same year as Bill Weasley. But rather than taking Molly Weasley's approach of homeschooling, Cari Fawcett was ready to get one rambunctious little boy out of her hair for a few hours. So Jerome went to Doug Fawcett's old Muggle primary school, and the other three Fawcett children followed suit. Sylvie really excelled in all her classes, was often bored, and was in trouble practically every day. The Fawcetts always had a telephone (unlike other Muggle appliances they didn't have, like television), for a quick way to reach Doug's parents, but by the time Sylvie was done with school, they'd probably used that phone to talk to her head and her teachers more than anyone else ever. ;p |

From the time her mum got off of maternity leave to the September Marietta was five she went to Ministry Daycare - part-time until her father died and the following six months when she lived with her grandmother (just because it had been a long time since Grandma Lennox had had a two year old and thought it best that Marietta keep her routine and have toys and other kids to play with), and then full-time afterwords. Once she was school aged, she attended a wizarding primary school. There was no way her mum could afford nannies or tutors and Muggle school was out of the question. Marietta's primary school was basically like a one room schoolhouse for children from around the area (and maybe some from farther away) in her teacher's home with about a dozen to twenty students at any time ranging from ages 5-11. Marietta's mum also paid an extra fee to have her teacher sort of babysit her in the after-school hours until she was off of work. Marietta read a lot then, so there was probably some self-instruction there, too. And that's how she got her basic education. |

Pansy's father attempted to teach her some things, some that were way above what she should have been learning, but Pansy didn't pick up any of it, so eventually he hired a tutor, but Pansy didn't like the first one, or the second, or any other tutor, and the tutors didn't like Pansy either. She annoyed them, pulled their hair, stomped on their toes, even as she got older, she didn't want a tutor. So her father just gave up and waited to toss her into Hogwarts. |

Seeing as Katie's family were always moving houses, her mother thought it would be best if she just home schooled her till Hogwarts. Her little sister Jessica is taught at home too! (Reply to this) (Thread) |

I dare say Padma was tutored for most of her preHogwarts life. ^^ She loves the whole learning thing, therefore would've tried to figure stuff out on her own too. Cormac was educated by his parents. Mighty fine job they did of it too. =D |
