something people ought to know about diego
There's one particular part of his history that bears elaborating on, especially in light of recent events. (I can prove, via time stamps, that I had this in his backstory LONG before Glee stole my LIFE and put it on screen, lmao. I'm just freaking clairvoyant, that's all.)
This is based on a true story from MY life.
When Diego was nineteen, he was in his first real relationship with a girl named Katie. He was kind of still hung up on Quinn (see his history) but he loved Katie.
One sunny Saturday morning, Katie was driving to meet him. There was a driver on the road who was still drunk from his partying the night before. He came hooning in from the passenger side (which is the right in New Zealand, but I know it's the left in America, right?). The car in front of Katie swerved and got out of his way, but unfortunately in the time it took for that to happen, Katie ran out of time to do anything to save herself. The drunk guy slammed into her car and sent her careening down a bank.
Paramedics and so on were called, but she was dead at the scene. They got the guy - someone took down his plates - and it went to court. The defense argument was based on the fact that Katie hadn't been wearing her seatbelt. They maintained that if she HAD worn it, the worst of her injuries would have been bumps and bruises, maybe a couple of broken bones. Basically, they made out like it was her own fault she died. The drunk driver got off on a technicality.
Diego's mostly fine, it's been three years and he's moved on, and he's very much in love with Quinn, but he's still a little nuts about safe driving. He won't drink and drive - not even a drop. None of this "I've only had a couple, I'm fine to drive" rubbish. He won't get in the car if he's had ANYTHING, and he stops others from doing it too. He doesn't text and drive either - he literally pulls over to text.
He's going to be furious with her when he finds out she was texting, but right now he's just frantic. He has no way of knowing yet that Quinn was in an accident, but he's getting flashbacks to the last time someone he loved was late to meet him, and wasn't answering her phone.
I just thought that might go a little way toward explaining his frame of mind right now.
