After getting back to her house from school, which was thankfully was a convenient three minute walk down the street, Anna headed upstairs to her room. She examined herself in the mirror for a moment as she walked passed it, and frowned slightly at her boyish appearance, and then frowned even more at the fact she was concerned with her appearance to begin with. Finn was messing with her head, and he didn’t even mean to. The fact that Anna was letting him made her even more confused.
Snapping out of her thoughts, she turned to her dresser and spritzed on some perfume before continuing to where she kept her make up. She put on some eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, and chapstick before deciding she was satisfied with the slight change. The girl grabbed money from her piggy bank and headed back downstairs, plopping herself down on the couch while she waited for Finn to arrive.
Finn had to borrow his mom’s car, so he walked a little quicker than he normally would. He didn’t live far, but it was a good ten minutes at least. Today, he made it in seven. Burt had dropped his mom off at work, so the car was sitting in the driveway and he grabbed the keys out of the bowl, made sure he had some money and drove off to pick up Anna.
Finn was a little confused about what he was feeling for Anna. It was so weird, having feelings for two girls at the same time. He still really liked Rachel, but she’d made out with Puck. And he really like Anna, and she hadn’t made out with anyone that he knew of, so he was sticking with her. She was really cool to talk to and stuff and liked the drums just like he did. He pulled up in front of her house and got out, walking up to ring her doorbell.
Hearing the doorbell, it took everything in Anna not to jump up and rush to the door, 1) to see Finn and 2) to make sure he didn’t stay out in the cold too long. After a few long moments, she stood and headed to the front door, opening it up. “Hey, stranger,” she greeted with a smile, tucking her hair behind her ear. She had curled it for school today, which was a huge difference from her usually straight hair. “Ready to go?”
“Hey,” he responded, smiling back at her. She looked really pretty with her hair curled like that. Not that he didn’t like her straight hair because he totally did. It was just cool to see it all curly and kinda girlier than usual. “Yeah, totally ready.”
She didn’t bother calling out a goodbye to her older brother Jason as she grabbed her skates, which were next to the door. Heading outside, Anna made sure to close the door tightly behind her. “So, where are we off to?” she asked, looking up at him as she walked beside him.
“You want gloves, right?” Finn asked, double-checking. “So I thought we’d go to the mall? If that’s cool?” There were definitely going to be gloves in a store at the mall. If she wanted cheap gloves, he figured they could go to Walmart or something.
“Sounds good to me,” she said with a shrug, climbing into the passenger seat and buckling her seat belt. Thankfully the car was still somewhat warm from the drive over here; just walking outside of the house had the girl freezing again. “Thanks again for offering to help me.”
Finn shook off his shivers a little bit as he slid back into the driver’s seat and started up the car. “No problem,” he replied. “Gloves are totally important, you know?”
“Right,” she agreed with a chuckle, sticking her hands in her jacket pockets and feeling something soft. “Oh! I have your gloves from the last time we hung out,” Anna explained, pulling out the item that she had felt. “Sorry I kept them for so long; we hardly see each other in school though, besides Glee practice.”
Finn glanced over at her and smiled. “Keep ‘em for now,” he said. “At least until we get you some. I’ve got more.” He nodded to the red gloves he had on now.
“Not all of us can be so lucky as to have so many pairs of gloves,” she teased, slipping on the gloves she had onto her hands. “So how have you been? How was your Christmas and New Year’s?”
“Good,” he replied. “Kinda weird, since it was the first Christmas with Kurt and Burt and all of us together, you know? But kinda cool too.” He grinned. “And that Secret Armadillo thing was awesome. I still don’t know who gave me all that stuff, but those gifts were awesome.”
“Yeah, my armadillo gifts were good too, though the last one was kind of...” she trailed off, not knowing if she should even mention it. “Anyway, they told me who they were as part of my last gift.”
“The last one was kind of what?” he asked curiously, glancing over at her with a raised eyebrow. She totally couldn’t just stop there. Now he was curious.
“Unexpected,” she said, trying to keep it as close to the truth as possible. The ‘gift’ was incredibly unexpected, given the fact one of Anna’s new, close friends had noticed her feelings for Finn. “What kind of things did you get?”
“Oh. Okay.” Finn shrugged a little at her answer and moved on. “Like, this really cool shirt with drums on it. But not just like a picture. It’s electronic, so you can totally actually play the drums. It’s so awesome. I’ll have to show it to you.”
“That sounds cool,” she said with a smile. “Yeah I got some girly stuff... I like it though. Nail polish and a necklace with a drum set as the pendant. So you have no idea who your person was?”
“That sounds cool, though,” he said. Obviously he wasn’t going to be into nail polish or super girly stuff, but the drum set pendant sounded nice, and if Anna was happy with her gifts, that was cool. “Nope, no idea. They didn’t say with the last gift and no one’s told me it was them yet.” He shrugged. He didn’t mind all that much, though he thought whoever that awesome person was deserved a thanks.
“I’d hardly say my last thing was a gift,” she said, before frowning. Knowing what it was, that sounded harsh. It’d be nice to go out with Finn and it was nice of Quinn to not mind that she liked him. “Well, I guess it was. I don’t know. I don’t think it’s ever going to be used.” That she was almost positive about.
Finn pulled into the mall’s parking lot and tried to find a spot close to the food court entrance. He was getting kind of hungry. “What do you mean it wasn’t a gift? What was it?” he asked, turning to look at Anna.
“I don’t know if I should tell you,” Anna said honestly, unbuckling her seat belt and sliding her bag onto her shoulder as she glanced at him. Seeing he was looking at her, she turned to him completely.
Finn’s eyebrows drew together at that. What could it be that she couldn’t seem to talk about? “Sure, you can. If you want.” He didn’t want to make her talk, but he was curious.
“Quinn was my secret armadillo... person,” she said, figuring it would be best to start out there. “The last thing she gave me was a card, saying that it was her and that I had permission to date you.” Anna took a deep breath, pausing for a moment. “Which I don’t know where she got that from, but. Yeah.” She averted her eyes, not wanting to see his reaction.
Finn frowned a little bit. Not at what she’d said, but at how nervous she seemed. He sort of mentally rolled his eyes when he heard what Quinn had done. Yeah, they were good friends or whatever, but it still wasn’t really up to her to be giving Anna permission to date him. That was just weird. Maybe it was some girl thing? Realizing Anna was done and he’d been silent for a while, he spoke up. “So...do you wanna go on a date, then?” he asked. He’d thought about it, kind of, but he hadn’t really asked her with all this Rachel drama. But he really did like her and think she was pretty awesome. So, if they had Quinn’s ‘permission’, he figured why not?
“You don’t have to do that, Finn,” she chuckled, shaking her head as she turned and opened her car door to get out. Anna figured he was only asking her to be nice, or even just as a ‘friend date.’ She stood from the car, the cold air greeting her.
Finn frowned as she got out of the car and scrambled out of his own door, walking around to meet her. “What do you mean? I want to,” he said.
“You want to,” she repeated, somewhat skeptical. It must have been the timing, but Anna felt that if he really wanted to date her, he would’ve asked on his own and not prompted by something that Quinn had done. Either way, she guessed she was happy enough just to be asked out by a guy instead of being asked to mess around in a dark corner. “If you really want to, then yes, I’d love to go on a date with you.” She smiled at him, hoping it showed that she was happy with this.
Finn wasn’t all that sure what to make of her reaction. She was smiling which meant happy, but she didn’t seem quite that happy to him. “I do want to,” he said. “But I mean, like...it’s not just because of what Quinn said. So you know. I do like you. A lot.” He wasn’t sure she needed to hear that, but it just kind of came out.
Her smile turned into a grin, and not a forced one. “Since when?” she asked with a chuckle, heading towards the entrance of the mall. “Do you wanna grab some food before we get gloves? I’m kinda hungry.”
Finn turned to make sure the car was locked then took a couple steps until he caught up with her, offering her his arm to hold onto. He was trying to be a gentleman. “For, like, a while,” he admitted. “I just didn’t think we were anything more than friends, which was cool enough for me, y’know?” He nodded, grinning at her mention of food. “Totally. I’m so hungry.”
She took his arm and rested her head on his shoulder as they walked, unable to stop smiling; she probably looked like she was insane. “Well, I’ve liked you for a while too. I didn’t do anything because I thought you liked Rachel and stuff,” Anna explained as they headed into the food court. “Where do you wanna eat?”
Finn looked around the food court, trying to decide what he thought looked good. “Burger King?” he suggested, nodding toward the stand.
“Mmm... chicken fries,” Anna said with a laugh. “Sounds good.” They made their way over to the line which wasn’t too long. When it was their turn to order, she got her usual chicken fries combo.
Finn ordered a cheeseburger and a large fry and paid for their food before Anna could, leading her over to an empty table.
“You know this doesn’t count as our date, right?” she asked with a laugh when she saw him pay for their food. “I mean, unless you want it to.”
Finn nodded and smiled, sitting down and unwrapping his burger. “I totally know. I was just trying to be, you know, a gentleman.” He gave her a sort of sheepish half-smile.
“You’re pretty good at that,” she told him honestly, opening her box of chicken fries and tearing open the small container of bbq sauce. “So I’m guessing you and Rachel haven’t talked things out yet or anything?” Anna asked. She didn’t know why she asked; maybe to make sure things with them were for sure not going to happen.
Finn frowned a bit, chewing on his burger. “Not really. I don’t really know what’s going on. But I think she’s into Puck.” He shrugged. It hurt a little that both his girlfriend and his almost-girlfriend? Crush? Whatever. It hurt that they both seemed to want Puck more than him.
“Puck’s not that great,” she shrugged. “Not that I would know. He’s a nice guy from what I can tell but he’s personally not my type anymore...” Saying that made Anna feel weird, and probably made Finn uncomfortable, too. She hoped that he didn’t change is mind about her once he found out about her history. “But if that’s who Rachel wants, let her have him. Better for all of us, you know? Mostly everyone is happy.”
Finn nodded. He was really beginning to think Puck was not that great. Sure, he was supposed to be his best friend, but best friends totally didn’t do this to each other. It sucked. “Yeah, I think you’re right,” he said with a shrug.
“I try to be,” she chuckled, taking a bite of a piece of her food. “I’m sorry to bring it up, I just... I don’t know. I guess I wanted to be on the same page or something?” Anna looked at him and smiled slightly, not sure if her reasoning would be good enough for him.
“Nah, it’s cool,” he said, flashing her a smile. He finished off his burger and moved on to his fries. From what he knew, which wasn’t a whole lot, girls were...just kind of like that.
She nodded, eating her food and fries quietly before speaking again. “Is there anything you wanna know about me?” Anna asked, glancing over at him as she grabbed her drink. “Ask anything you want.”
Finn looked a little surprised and nodded, chewing his fries thoughtfully. “Have you ever had, like, a real boyfriend before?” He’d never heard her mention one or heard anything around school, so he was sort of curious.
Pausing for a moment, she shook her head. “No, I haven’t,” Anna told him as she finished off the last of her fries and condensing her garbage into the bag she had been given. “Have you ever had a real boyfriend before?” she asked teasingly, grinning at him.
Finn made a face but laughed. “Uh, no. Totally not into dudes.” Not that Kurt hadn’t tried his damnedest to change that last year. But now that they were brothers or whatever, it totally wasn’t like that.
Anna laughed with him, feeling really at east about the whole situation. “What else d’you wanna know?”
Finishing his food, Finn shrugged. “I’ll think of it as we go. Cool?” He stood to throw out his garbage and held out a hand to take hers too.
“Sure,” she nodded, standing and keeping her garbage. Sticking her tongue out at him briefly, she approached the garbage cans and threw her things out. “I’m capable of taking out the trash, thank you very much.”
“I was being nice,” he said, laughing a bit again. This seemed like it would be very different from dating Quinn and sort-of dating Rachel. They had seemed to expect that sort of thing from him. “So, uh, gloves. I’m not sure where you buy girls’ gloves. That Macy’s place?”
“You’re always nice, but that doesn’t mean you have to do nice things all the time,” she said, smiling at him. “Um... Macy’s would work. I mean, I don’t need girly gloves. Just... decent gloves that do the job. Keep my hands warm and stuff.”
“Let’s try,” he said with a nod. “I mean, I bet they probably have some that are warm but girly and not too expensive, if that’s a problem.” He knew he certainly wasn’t rolling in cash, though Burt was a lot more well off than he and his mom had been on their own.
“Not a problem,” she said, shaking her head as they headed out of the food court. Anna didn’t know where Macy’s was in the mall, mainly because she had only been to the mall twice before this, and once was for Christmas shopping. So, she walked beside Finn, though let him lead the way.
Finn was way too used to the mall for his liking. Quinn had sort of liked to use him as a pack mule -- meaning, he was her personal bag carrier. He found Macy’s quickly enough and led Anna inside. “Okay, so...gloves.” He looked around, trying to assess where they would be in this humongous place.
She chuckled, looking around. “Gloves,” she repeated, eyeing what was in their view to find the item they were in search of.
A saleslady came up to them and once Finn told her what they were looking for, she led them over to an assortment of gloves. They were all pretty cheap, a hundred dollars or less. “Like any?” he asked Anna.
She looked at them and was slightly surprised by the price, not having expected them to be as expensive. After taking a quick survey of them, she noticed a purpleish reddish set of wintery things. Taking a closer look, she noticed it was on sale, and she had just enough money for it. She picked up the beret, gloves, and scarf. “Think I’d look good in these?” she asked, showing him what she had picked out.
Finn looked at what she’d picked and grinned. “Definitely,” he said with a nod.
“Alright, I’ll get this then,” she smiled, double checking the price to make sure she had enough before looking back at him. “Do you wanna look around while I go to cash out?”
“Oh, uh, sure.” Finn shrugged and sort of moved away. He had no idea if there was anything in Macy’s that would interest him, but looking around couldn’t hurt.
“Isn’t there like a guy’s section or something?” she asked with a chuckle, embarrassed she didn’t know this. She felt that, as a girl, she should know this.
“I dunno.” Finn shrugged. He’d been here but only with Quinn, so he didn’t really remember if there was a guys’ section. “Uh, why don’t you go pay and I’ll meet you out front or something?” He didn’t really get why he couldn’t come with her to pay, but if she didn’t want him to, he wouldn’t.
“You could stay, I just don’t want you to be bored waiting here with me,” she admitted with a smile. “It’s up to you. Do whatcha want.”
“I’ll come with,” Finn said easily. He’d rather, since he had no idea what else to do with himself. “Then we’ll go ice skating!” He grinned.
“Yup,” she grinned, heading up to the cash register with her things in hand. She pulled out her 63 dollars and some-odd cents as they waited for the single person in front of them. “I’m excited. The last time we went was a lot of fun.”
“It totally was,” Finn agreed, nodding. He felt a little bad for basically asking Anna if she was a lesbian, but they seemed to be past that, so he wasn’t worried. Once she’d paid and had everything bad, he offered his arm again to lead her back out to her car.
She chuckled at his chivalrous behavior and took his arm with a smile. It was definitely a nice change compared to what she was used to; being alone, or being with someone without any feeling being there. Anna had her bag in hand, excited to get to the car and try on her newly purchased items.
Finn unlocked the car and slid into the driver’s seat to start the car up. It was so cold out! He needed to get the heat going.
She got into the passenger’s seat, put on her seat belt, and immediately started taking the tags off her new winter items. Flipping over the visor to see herself in the mirror, she carefully slid the beret onto her head, making sure her curls where unharmed. Anna put on her scarf and gloves next, and looked at Finn. “So?”
Finn looked over at her and smiled with an approving nod. “Looks awesome,” he said honestly, before backing out of his spot and heading for the ice rink.
“Okay good,” Anna grinned. “I gotta know what you like on me so I know what to wear on our date.”
Finn grinned. “What you normally wear is cool by me,” he said. “You don’t have to dress up or anything if you don’t want to.”
“I like dressing to impress on a date,” she chuckled. “Makes me feel more like a girl than I usually act and stuff.”
Finn nodded. “Alright. That’s good too.” He liked when girls dressed up, to be honest. He didn’t care if they didn’t, but it was nice. They always looked even hotter in dresses and stuff. Barely five minutes later, he pulled into the ice rink lot and parked.
Once they had parked, Anna grabbed her skates from the back seat of the car as she got out, slinging them carefully over her shoulder. “I’ll try not to make you fall this time.”
“Well, I’m kind of huge and stuff, so I might fall anyway,” Finn said with a shrug, moving with her into the rink. He had to rent skates in a huge size, so he left her to lace up hers on a bench while he stepped into the short line.
Anna watched him walk away briefly before getting to work on her skates, slipping her feet into the skates and lacing them up tightly so they would fidget or fall of her feet. She adjusted her jeans to be over the skates, instead of tucked in, before standing up, getting used to balancing on the thin blade.
Finn moved back over to Anna’s bench to put on and lace up his skates then stood beside her, a little too eagerly, and almost pitched head first onto the floor. “Shit!” He managed to catch himself, then took a few minutes to actually get used to standing.
She instinctively put out her arms to try and help him steady himself when she saw him losing her balance. Laughing, she wrapped an arm around his waist and hugged him close. “You okay?”
Finn put an arm around her shoulders and nodded. “Yeah, I’m okay,” he said, laughing a bit as well. “See, told ya I was too big and clumsy for this. I’ll find my own way to fall.”
“You’re the one that suggested ice skating,” she retorted with a grin. “It’s no ones fault but your own. Think you can manage walking over to the ice?” Anna asked as she looked up at him, her free arm reaching up and putting a hand on top of her beret to keep it in place.
Finn laughed. “It’s totally cool. It’s fun, even if I fall a lot. And at least I have a long way to fall.” He led her over to the ice and slowly stepped on.
“Wouldn’t that be a bad thing?” she chuckled, letting go of him to step onto the ice carefully; she knew she had a hard time balancing on the ice at first and didn’t want to make him fall if she did. “‘Cause of the momentum or something?”
“Oh.” Finn paused, eyebrows furrowing as he thought about that. “Yeah, I guess that would be kinda bad then.” He shrugged and gripped the top of the wall with one hand as he slowly got used to the skates.
She skated a little bit, adjusting to the feel of it before turning back to Finn, who was clinging to the wall. “You’re....” Anna started to say, trailing off with a laugh and a grin before offering him her hand. “C’mon.”
Finn willingly took her hand and started slowly after her. This was turning out to be a pretty awesome afternoon.
