Who: Anna & Finn Where: Ice skating rink What: Anna making Finn forget about his angst again. She's really good at that. When: Saturday, December 10th Rating: SFW
Anna sat on a bench near the ice, lacing her ice skates as she listened to the Glee and Band kids hang out and talk, go sledding, ice skate, and play in the snow. Snow wasn’t something Anna was really used to, besides going upstate once in a while to snowboard, but it was nice change. Plus, it was a chance to get to know some people she had talked to only on the journals, like Rachel, who came along with her because of their plans to hang out later that day.
Finn had seen Anna arrive with Rachel and he narrowed his eyes at the pair. Why was Anna hanging out with Rachel? Didn’t she know that Rachel was pure evil and crushed hearts? Well... maybe that was a bit dramatic. It seemed she only crushed his heart. He was trying not to think of that and instead throwing himself into the Christmas spirit.
Once he saw Anna alone he skated over to her shakily and held onto the wall as he neared the rink’s exit. Walking in ice skates was so awkward, but he eventually made it over to her and sat down. “Hey.” Smooth.
Anna looked up when Finn sat down beside her. “Finn, hey,” she greeted with a grin before looking back down at her skates and lacing them tighter. “How are you? I haven’t talked to you in a while.” She was in a good mood because of her newly found ability to be social, and because of this, was completely oblivious to his sour attitude towards Rachel.
“Yeah, I’m okay,” Finn said half-heartedly before saying, “So, I saw you with Rachel. Uh... I didn’t know you two were friends.”
She noticed his attitude after his reply and stopped what she was doing, looking at him with a perplexed look. “Uh... kind of, I guess. We’re getting to know each other. What’s it matter?” Anna was confused as she sighed, finishing lacing her skates.
“I suppose you’re not at risk because you won’t fall in love with her. Unless you like girls, which is totally cool if you do. But she’s a heart breaker,” Finn rambled and frowned. “Never mind. I’m not making any sense.”
The girl stared at him, dumbfounded. “Uh.” She didn’t know where to start. “I’m not a lesbian. I’m sorry she broke your heart. Wanna skate with me?” she asked with a smile as she stood, offering him her hand to help him stand up.
How did Anna just make everything so simple? Wasn’t she supposed to ask what happened and get all weird and girly and emotional about things? That’s what happened in chick flicks. It was a relief though because he wasn’t even sure what to say about it anymore. Instead he stood then nodded a little stiffly. “Okay. I’m not very good though.”
“I’ve skated... twice in my life, maybe? So I’m sure you’re better than me,” she assured with a smile, retracting her rejected hand and turning toward the rink. “I’m probably going to fall. I won’t be mad if you laugh at me.” If he wanted to talk about Rachel, she would let him, but she wasn’t going to pressure him to talk about it. He knew she was there if he needed her.
Having not noticed her hand before, Finn watched it as she started walking away, feeling a little guilty. He was sort of being a jerk because he was all distraught about Rachel and stuff. And that wasn’t fair to people. Quickly catching up to her once they were on the ice, he skated along a little clumsily and looked at her. “Well, I’m like the most uncoordinated person ever. So I’m sure you can do it.”
She pushed her way slowly, making sure to not only be slow enough to have him keep up but to also assure she doesn’t make herself look like a dumbass. “Don’t you play football and sports and stuff? Shouldn’t you be coordinated to do that?” Anna asked with a laugh. “Though I guess that doesn’t really apply with ice skating unless you play ice hockey.”
“It’s different with football and other stuff. Like dancing,” he said, grimacing slightly. He sucked at dancing. And everyone always made fun of him. He supposed he should just accept it and laugh at the ‘jokes’. It kind of sucked though. “I don’t know why it’s different. It just is. I probably don’t make much sense.”
“Well, there’s different types of coordination,” she said with a shrug. “Like I’ve got good hand-eye coordination because of drumming and volleyball, and I’ve got good foot-eye coordination because of drumming too... plus I played soccer a long time ago, too.” Anna skated in front of him and turned, facing him as she drifted backwards. She was surprised at her own ability to do that, assuming that she was going to fall. Grinning at her accomplishment, she waited til he was near her before turning back around. However, when she spun back around, her skate caught the ice oddly and she twisted, falling to the ice with a gasp. She landed on her butt and looked up at Finn, laughing lightly as she felt her face heat up. “Ow.”
“Yeah, I don’t think I have good food-eye coordination,” Finn said as he looked down at his skates and concentrated on his movements. A few moments later though he saw Anna on the ground and he thought he was going to run into her. He swerved to the side, his ice pick digging in as he tried avoiding the collision, and sprawled out on the ice, practically doing a belly flop. “Yeah... ow.”
Anna’s eyes widened and she laughed a little more. “Oh my god, Finn... I’m so sorry. Are you okay?” she asked, twisting herself onto her knees and crawling over to him.
Finn just stayed on his stomach for a while, unable to move because he was laughing so much. He hadn’t even known how that had all happened but he wasn’t really that hurt so it was funny as hell. “Yeah, I’m fine,” he finally choked out. “Are you okay?”
She grinned at his laughing, glad that he was having a good time. “Almost busted my ass but I’m okay, yeah. I don’t know how I’m going to get up though.” Anna looked around, brushing her bare hands off on her jacket; she really needed a pair of gloves if she was going to live in this state.
Finn rolled over to his back but stayed down on the ice, not ready to pull himself up just yet. This was much easier (and less painful) than the actual ice skating itself. “Well we can crawl over to the wall and pull ourselves up eventually,” he said with a chuckle.
“You just want to lay in the middle of the ice rink?” she asked with a laugh, moving back onto her butt and looking down at him. “Aren’t you cold?” Despite being on the ice, the only thing cold were Anna’s hands, and her butt. The girl stretched her legs out in front of her, clinking her skates together as she leaned back on her hands.
Finn shrugged and stayed where he was on the ground. “What’s wrong with that? No one is going to hit us. And if they do then... I don’t know. They do. You don’t have to stay,” he said, turning his head to look at her, giving her a challenging grin.
“Nothing wrong with that, it’s just weird,” Anna said with a grin, and with that she laid down beside him, folding her arms under her head as a makeshift pillow. “You’re trying to get rid of me, so I’ll stay.”
“What is that called again? When you play mind games on them so they do the opposite of what you want?” Finn asked, smirking. “Whatever it’s called, you’re onto my game.”
“Reverse psychology?” she asked, laughing. “And here I thought you liked me. I’m hurt, Finn. Thanks a lot.” Anna looked over at him and gave him a pout, nudging him playfully.
“I do like you. Wasn’t me telling you to leave like telling you to stay. It was kind of like backwards day or something except the technical term is, uh, reverse psychology!” Finn quailed slightly, not noticing that she was joking at first. “Uh, I mean... yeah, you’re okay.”
“Just okay? I think I’m pretty damn awesome,” Anna replied, moving her arms back under her head comfortably. She stared up into the sky, glad it was still relatively sunny out. It was snowing lightly and she stuck her tongue out to catch some snowflakes. “You’re okay too.”
“I know,” Finn said cockily and grinned. “My ass is getting wet though so maybe we should get up. And try not to fall again. That sounds like a good plan to me.”
“Alright well you get up first and help me up,” she commanded with a grin, before adding nicely, “Please?” Anna sat up and shifted back onto her knees, figuring it would be the easiest way to stand up.
Finn rolled back onto his stomach then shifted up onto his knees and finally up on the skates, staying in a low crouch for stability. “Okay, give me your hands,” he said, holding his out for her, “And I’ll pull you up. But don’t make us fall over again.”
“Damnit, my intentions are ruined,” Anna said, scowling playfully as she gently placed her hands in his. “Are you sure I can’t make you fall over again?”
“Why don’t you have gloves?” Finn asked as he took Anna’s hands in his. “You should really get on that. Well, you should get gloves on. And buy some so you can wear them.” He was over explaining so he just shut up and pulled her until they were somewhat eye level. “There. All good?”
She held onto his hands tightly (not too tight; just tight enough to rely on him for support) while she looked down to make sure she had her feet safely on the ice and was positive she wasn’t going to fall. “Huh? Oh,” Anna started out, letting go of his hands. “Thanks. I don’t have gloves because I usually borrow my older brothers’ but they took their gloves to college with them... I’m surprised I even have something remotely close to a winter coat.”
“You didn’t come very prepared for Ohio,” Finn chuckled again and shoved his hands in his pockets now that they were free. “Uh, well. I could help you pick some out some time if you wanted,” he said, his voice a little quieter now.
“Yeah, well, snow isn’t exactly prominent in Los Angeles,” Anna said with a small smile. “Thanks, but only if you want to help. I take it from your change in tone you must be embarrassed to be seen with me.” She was teasing, but the girl wouldn’t blame him if it was the truth; she was the awkward new girl.
“What? I’m not embarrassed to be seen with you!” Finn protested in all seriousness. “I just didn’t know if you thought I was lame or something. I mean, how easy is it to buy a pair of gloves. It’s not a two person job...”
“I wouldn’t know where to buy them,” she admitted, smiling. “You’re not lame at all, and I would love your help buying some gloves. You can let me know what pair of gloves make my hands look fat or something.” Anna laughed lightly at her own joke, which was lame of her to do. “Just let me know when you’re free I guess.”
Finn pulled one of the hands out of his pocket and rubbed at the back of his neck. At least she didn’t think he was a total loser. That was good. She was one of the only nice girls right now and he didn’t want her not liking him. “Well cool then. I’ll definitely help you. I’m sure your hands won’t look fat...” He chuckled back before peeling his gloves off. “Here, you can use these today.”
She stared at him, dumbfounded at his offer; it was one of the nicest things that a guy did for her in a really long time, if ever. “Won’t your hands be cold?” Anna asked softly. “Mine will be fine; I can keep them in my pockets or something. It’s what I’ve been doing.”
“Nah, it’s cool,” Finn said, waving the hand that wasn’t holding out the gloves. “I’m used to this kind of weather. Just don’t push me down on the ice and I’ll be fine,” he grinned.
“Well, thanks a lot,” Anna replied, taking the gloves and slipping them onto her hands. She could have died from happiness right there at how amazing the warmth felt over her freezing cold appendages; she had no idea they were that cold until just then. Placing her hands on his shoulders, Anna gave him the lightest kiss on the cheek, which she felt stupid doing but it was a sort of thank you that went unsaid besides, well, what she just said. “I’m gunna skate around a bit more. Feel free to join... Thanks again for everything.” Her cheeks were pink and though she wanted to blame it on the cold, she was embarrassed at what she had just done and just wanted to disappear. What if she had fucked things up with Finn just as they had started?
Finn just stood there dumbly for a moment before blushing as well. “Uh, yeah, it was no problem. Um... I’m going to go sit for a little while. I’ll catch you later.” He was a little dazed because he wasn’t sure who kissed on the cheek as a thank you, but it was surprisingly nice. But he wasn’t about to do the same thing he did with Rachel -- jumping into a relationship just after getting his heart broken. It would be unfair to Anna. Besides, he wasn’t even sure if he liked her. She was nice and all but they didn’t know each other that well.
Realizing he was still standing there, he gave Anna a small wave and a smile before turning around and skating off back to the bench.
Anna could honestly say at that point she didn’t know what had come over her to make her do such a stupid thing. Sure, Finn was nice, and sure Finn was incredibly attractive, but kiss him on the cheek? That’s about five centimeters from the lips. It’s close enough to be considered flirting, and that wasn’t her intention. Part of her hoped that no one saw, because the last thing she needed was everyone getting on her ass about kissing Finn for lending her a pair of gloves. She waved back before starting to skate around more, hoping it’ll clear her head.
