Tim made his way into the library, stomping the snow off his feet as he entered. It was another cold, snowy day and he found that he was looking forward to being back in California come the summer. Not that he wouldn’t miss McDermott because he would but the weather? No, that was something he definitely wouldn’t miss. He was in the library today to pick up something he’d requested via intra university loan. A DVD for his Sci-Fi film class that the school hadn’t had and he hadn’t had in his personal collection. The email he’d received earlier had said that he could pick it up at the reference desk so he made his way over there and got in line behind a couple of students.
Once he reached the front of the line, he was surprised to see who was standing behind the desk. Tim knew his sister’s boyfriend worked there but he didn’t know his hours. “Hey Auden,” he said with a smile. He liked the young man and enjoyed the brief time he’d spent with him over the holidays. “How’s it going? I need to pick this up.” He handed Auden the slip he’d printed off.
"Oh, hey," Auden replied, giving Tim a slight smile as he took the slip, glancing over the DVD title. He still didn't really know Charlotte's brother very well, even though they'd spent some time together while Auden had been in San Diego. That had less to do with Tim and more to do with the fact that Auden just had a hard time getting to know people in general. He wanted Charlotte's family to like him, but at the same time, he was never sure what he was supposed to do or say around Tim.
He never really knew what to call him, either; if Tim was okay because they knew each other in a capacity outside of the classroom, or if he should stick to Professor because that was what Tim was. He could never quite decide, and so usually avoided calling him anything. "We just got this in," he added, deciding to just focus on the job for now. "Give me a sec to grab it."
Auden got up and headed into the small room behind the desk, where they kept recently delivered materials. It only took him a couple of minutes to locate the DVD. He returned to the desk with it, and sat down so that he could begin the process of checking it out. "So, how're you doing?" he added, politely.
“Good,” he said as he waited for Auden to check out the DVD. “Keeping pretty busy, missing Chloe.” Tim smiled as he mentioned his fiancee. “I did get to see her over the weekend though so that was good. How about you?”
“Good,” Auden echoed, lifting his shoulders a bit. He scanned the DVD, then typed the information he needed into the computer. “Can’t really complain.”
“That’s good,” he said. Tim was a loss for words. He knew Auden wasn’t very talkative and he wondered what he talked about with Charlotte. “So..um..this your last semester too?”
“Yeah. Graduating in May,” Auden replied, glancing back at Tim with a slight smile. “I don’t know what I’m doing after that.” Tim hadn’t asked, but most people tended to ask him about his plans past graduation these days, and he figured it was easier to head off the inevitable. “Grad school, probably.”
“Grad school is always a good choice,” he replied with a nod. “and it give you a little more time before you have to worry about getting a real job. Are you thinking about going into teaching?” He was curious about the young man. It surprised him that despite the fact that he’d been dating Charlotte for some time now, he knew very little about him.
“I don’t know. Maybe. If I go for my Ph.D, then yeah, I’ll probably want to teach,” Auden replied. “But mostly, I want to write.” It would have been cool to be a professor, and Auden wouldn’t mind if that’s what he ended up as, but he couldn’t pretend it was his biggest passion. That would always be poetry.
“That sounds like a great ambition. I’m not much of a writer myself but I’ll admit to having dreams of directing one day. Don’t know if that will ever happen,” he said with a shrug. “I love teaching so I might as well stick with I’m decent at.”
“Well. It’s good that you like it,” Auden said. The words sounded a little awkward to him, but he didn’t know what else to say. He really wasn’t good at small talk.
“I do,” he said with a nod. “I hope the students like me as much as I enjoy them.” Tim couldn’t say that he was very good at small talk himself and he found that he was running out of things to say to the young man. He supposed they could talk about the obvious link between them which was Charlotte but he didn’t want Auden to think he was butting in. Finally he decided to just go. Picking up the DVD, he smiled at Auden. “Thanks for the help,” he said. “I need to be getting back to the office. If you see my sister tonight, tell her I said hi.”
“Sure,” Auden replied, returning Tim’s smile. “Um, nice seeing you.” Maybe one day he’d be comfortable around Tim, instead of simply awkward. For now, however, it was what it was. At least Tim didn’t seem to dislike him, although he probably didn’t like him all that much either. He’d take what he could get.
“Yeah, see you,” he said and nodded as he walked away. He had no idea how the young man felt about him but he hoped that he at least liked him. Since he was so important to Charlotte, Tim wanted him to feel comfortable around him...hopefully he’d succeeded.
