It wasn’t that Chloe necessarily needed anything new it was just that with fall’s brisk weather finally upon them she’d started thinking that she’d like a few new things. So after a leisurely Saturday morning she’d convinced Tim to drive with her into Springfield so she could see what she could find at the mall there. Boston would perhaps had been preferable to her shopping tastes and as much as taking a weekend for a shopping trip and convincing Tim to come along was tempting, well play rehearsals made that difficult to she settled for the afternoon in the closer town. The mall was decent enough.
They’d grabbed lunch at a restaurant adjacent to the mall first and upon wandering inside Chloe found herself automatically drawn to one of the jewelry store windows. It wasn’t unusual at all for her to be drawn towards the shiny baubles and she was sure Tim wouldn't mind as she tugged him towards the window.
Tim had never been much of a shopper unless DVDs or movie memorabilia was involved but he had to admit that he always got a kick out of shopping with Chloe. Maybe it was because she enjoyed it so much, it was like a sport to her, and he enjoyed her enthusiasm even if he couldn’t quite share it. When she’d suggested they go to Springfield on Saturday, he had protested at first because she expected it but the truth was that he didn’t mind it that much, he was just happy to spend time with her. They’d both been busy lately and it seemed as if they were so exhausted when they finally saw one another that they could barely function. This would be a good chance to relax.
Lunch had been pleasant and when they entered the mall, Tim waited to see where Chloe would head first. He hadn’t expected her to head for the jewelry store window and had to suppress a smile when she did. “Let me guess,” he said with a laugh. “you’d like to have one of everything?” He knew how she loved jewelry and it was clear from her expression that she was in love with most of what was in the window.
“One of everything and two of those.” Chloe answered with a bright smile as she pointed to a bracelet in the window. “Mind if we go in and look?” Jewelry shopping wasn’t on her list of things to do that day but she couldn’t resist at least taking a closer look as to what there was.
He laughed and gave her hand a squeeze. “Oh really now? You might have to actually hook up with Chris Pine if you want all of that,” he said. When she mentioned going inside, he smiled. “Sure, we can go in.” He didn’t mind going in with her, it would kill some time and he knew she’d enjoy it.
“True fact, My College professor of a boyfriend can’t really afford such Baubles” She teased lightly as she led the way inside although she ran her thumb across the underside of the promise ring he’d given her for Christmas the year before. Maybe it wasn’t as expensive as some things but it was beautiful and he’d bought it for her which made it worth more than anything they would see inside that store.
“Well your college professor of a boyfriend is awesome so you’re lucky there,” he said with a smirk as he followed into the store. Tim was happy that she was so accepting of the fact that he couldn’t provide her with the finer things of life. He knew she was perfectly capable of doing that for herself so he tried his best to do little things for her because he’d discovered that she loved those just as much.
“He is rather awesome.” Chloe agreed as she pressed her lips to his cheek before leading him over to one of the jewelry cases and glancing inside.
Tim followed her and tried to suppress a smile when he saw what she was looking at. Engagement rings. That meant they were more or less on the same page and she was less likely to freak out when he asked her to marry him the following week. For a minute he felt a thrill of anxiety course through him at the thought but he quickly discarded it. He wanted to marry her and knew that she wanted the same thing, the only reason was he was nervous was the timing. What if she wasn’t ready? No, he wasn’t going to think about that right now.
“Any particular reason you picked this case?” he asked as his gaze followed hers. He was trying to act as innocent as possible although he was probably failing miserably.
“Because large diamonds are fun to look at?’ Chloe suggested with a bit of a sheepish smile. the truth was that she hadn’t realized in the first few moments what she was looking at. It had just been the beautiful rings that had caught her attention. Now though, well it was slightly amusing that she’d picked that case to glance at. “Plus you know...I’m really hoping someday, someone gives me one of these”
“I’m sure someone will do that,” he said and squeezed her hand. “After all, you’re quite a catch as you never get tired of telling me” Tim loved teasing her, mostly because he knew that she’d take it well and besides she’d told him that before and she couldn’t deny it.
“Well, I only speak the truth” Chloe laughed as he teased her. She didn’t mind it at all, in fact she loved that he teased her like that. It was part of what made them work.
As they stood there, Tim couldn’t help but wonder how she would like the ring he had for her. It was old, having belonged to his great grandmother originally, and the setting wasn’t as modern as some of the ones in the case before them. Even though Elizabeth had assured him that Chloe would love it, he was still a little worried. “What kind do you like?” he asked, unable to contain his curiosity any longer.
“The really big ones.” Chloe replied with an outright grin to show she was joking before she studied the rings in the case again, wondering for a moment what a real engagement ring would look like on her hand. “Honestly? “ She paused and then pointed to a ring that stood out to her. “Something like that, a little unusual you know? Not the same thing everyone else wears.”
It was hard not to breathe a sigh of relief when she pointed out the ring since the setting wasn’t that different from the ring that he had. “So you want to be a little different? I’m not surprised. You’re not typical and that’s what I like about you.” Chloe was the type of woman who stood out in a crowd, she would even if she wasn’t well known, and he liked that about her.
“Of course I want a little different,” Chloe explained. “Where’s the fun in that?” She asked as she smiled up at him. “I want my ring to be different...to be just mine, you know?”
“I don’t blame you,” he said, returning her smile. “If guys wore engagement rings, I’d want mine to be unique too. Maybe we could start a trend. You can buy me a ring, what do you say?”
“Big old flashy diamond that no one would miss?” She teased as she fought to keep a straight face. “I say we do that Tim!”
“I’m sure the idea would catch on,” he said. “because you’re a celebrity and all so your fans would decide it was the thing to do. I’m thinking I might become famous. What do you think about that?”
“I’m thinking you’d be insufferable if you were famous.” She countered and then glanced over as the sales lady for the store finally approached them and asked if there was anything they wanted to look at. the truth was Chloe was sort of itching to try something on, she just wasn’t sure if Tim would be okay with that or not.
“Insufferable? Me?” he said, putting his hand to his chest in mock horror as he winked at her. Feeling a little mischievous, he nodded at the sales lady and pointed at the ring Chloe had been looking at. “We’d like to look at that one,” he said and gave Chloe a smile.
“Really?” Chloe was definitely a little surprised when Tim said they’d like to look at it and it took her a moment to recover. “I mean yes, that. one.” She quickly amended with a smile at the sales lady. As Chloe waited for the woman to unlock the case and pull the ring out to look at she thought for a moment how glad she was that this was Springfield and not LA, since if they’d been looking at engagement rings there it would no doubt hit TMZ or the tabloids.
He had to admit that he wanted to see what an engagement ring would look like on her hand. When the sales lady handed the ring to them, he looked at it, carefully noting Chloe’s expression as she looked at it. “What do you think?” he asked as she turned it over in her hand. “Put it on and let’s see how it looks.”
What did Chloe think? She thought the ring itself was spectacular looking, more than that though she couldn’t quite believe that she was trying out an engagement ring with Tim. “It’s pretty.” She admitted as she inspected it. “Gorgeous actually.” She added and then with a bit of an impish smile looked up at Tim. “Put it on me.” She suggested as she held it out to him, deciding that if they were going to do this for fun she may as well totally get into the spirit of things.
Raising an eyebrow, he took the ring from her and slipped off the promise ring that was on her left hand before putting the engagement ring in its place. He coudn’t stop smiling when he looked at it, it was perfect for her and more than ever he couldn’t wait to see what the ring he had at home would look like on her hand. “It looks great,” he said. “I think it’s very nice.”
Chloe couldn’t help the giggle of delight when he went along with her idea and a glance at the saleswoman showed her that they were being watched with a bit of amusement. “It does look good.” She agreed as she lifted her hand, tilting it so she could get a good look at the ring on it. In fact it looked great and she realized she couldn’t wait until they were doing this for real.
“We’ll have to remember that one,” he said and slid the ring off her finger albeit a little reluctantly. Handing it back to the saleswoman he thanked her and put the promise ring back on Chloe’s finger. “Ready to go?” he asked. Tim was afraid that if they stayed in the store much longer that he’d slip and ask her right there, ring or no ring.
“We will.” Chloe agreed, giving a smile of thanks at the saleswoman as Tim handed her the ring and still smiling she reached for his hand, lacing her fingers with his. “And yea, I am. I’ve got shopping to do!”
