As expected, returning to school after a long break was crazy. KJ swore there were more people around than she remembered since last spring. Or maybe it was just because she was in the thick of Welcome Week activity and everyone was concentrated in Harper Cove - it would definitely have that effect. Or something. She didn't really know but she was glad for the distraction; it had been bittersweet both coming back to school without Riley and finally moving in with Thisbe. It hadn't been so bad, so far, but KJ could swear they were both waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak.
At the moment, though, she was busy sitting at the theatre booth for Club Day; she was having fun both meeting new people and outlining everything that theatre could offer. She had just come back from handing out flyers when a girl approached the table. "Hi!" she said, brightly. "Interested in theatre?" she asked.
Olivia was making a bold move today, now that she was more comfortable with herself, and she had some confidence she would really try and make an effort to be part of Theatre productions, Chris hadn't made it sound so scary. The girl at the table was very nice, so she thought she'd give it a shot, "Actually... yes." Olivia said with a smile, "I'm an art major though... so I'm not sure what I could do... or..." she was stammering a bit, unsure of what questions she should ask.
KJ smiled. "Well, we can use you no matter what major you are," she said, gently. "You're an art major? What kind of art do you do?" she asked, curiously. "We always need people to help with sets. I mean, sometimes they make me do it and I'm horrible at it." She made a face. "Unless you'd rather just act, like me." She grinned.
Olivia smiled shyly, "I'm a painter... but I'm not really using paint as much anymore more so mixed media." She always had hard time explaining what she did to other people, it wasn't your average artist materials, or style for that matter. "I think I might like to try acting... I mean I haven't really done it before, but I've always wanted to try."
KJ liked this girl already. She was cute - both physically and in her manner. It was almost like she wanted to hug her, but KJ knew better than to do that (she'd learned from previous experience). "I'm not really sure off the top of my head what classes there are available for non-theatre majors, but I'm sure they exist," she said. "I know that isn't really helpful. Sorry." She cringed. "But there's lots of information here at this table that might help! And I mean, you never know... you might be an amazing actress and not know it yet!"
Olivia blushed, did she really think that? "I'd never thought of it like that, as you can tell I'm pretty shy..." she looked at the papers in front of the girl, "But that's part of why I want to do it, I need to get over it someday." She offered her an innocent smile, "That doesn't sound really strange does it?"
Unable to help smiling back, KJ shrugged. "It does and it doesn't. I mean, I've never really been shy so I can't say that I've been there, but it's good that you're doing something about it! Plus, being in theatre is so fun. I'm sure you'll have a great time doing it." She paused. "Oh, I have to have you sign up because you're interested. Here, give us your name, autograph, and phone number." KJ grabbed the clipboard at the edge of the table and thrust it towards the girl. "I'm KJ, by the way. I'm a junior and a theatre major, obviously. What about you?"
Olivia was relieved the this girl was so supportive, maybe she would see her around and give her some tips. She accepted the clipboard gratefully, "Thanks," Olivia wrote her name along with phone number and finished signing the paper. She handed it back to KJ with to smile, "Olivia, I'm a sophomore, and as I mentioned before an arts major."
"It's nice to meet you, then, Olivia," KJ returned with a smile. She set the clipboard back down on the table and then leaned forward, making herself a little more comfortable. "You said you paint, right? That's cool," KJ mentioned, conversationally. "My mom did a lot of painting back in the day. She's a weaver and sculptor now, but once in a while she still paints." She paused. "So do you know anyone in the theatre department, by any chance? It might make things easier, transitioning, you know."
"That's really cool," Olivia said with a smile, it was nice to hear from someone that may know a little more about art than the average person, she wondered what KJ's mother painted, obviously she didn't have time to go into asking that now, but if she ever saw KJ again at least she had somewhere to start a conversation.
"Yeah actually," she said remembering Chris was in theatre, "Chris Carter... he's my boyfriends best friend." even though the two of them didn't get along so well in the past since Matt's panic attack on her birthday they began to bond a bit more, and she loved how much Chris actually cared for Matt, he needed that.
At that, KJ smiled. "I know Chris," she said, nodding. "He's really talented," she commented. There was also all that awkwardness with the whole him liking her thing, but she was hoping they were past all that now. The she registered what Olivia had said. "Wait, your boyfriend's best friend, you said? Do they happen to be roommates by any chance? Because if they are then I think I've met your boyfriend... he came to my birthday party last year! Well, it was both mine and Chris's surprise party." She nodded.
Olivia laughed, she wondered if this was the said girl that Matt always said Chris was going on about, she had never truly caught the name. As she examined the girl and she fit the description well enough, she'd just have to ask Matt later. "That might be right... his name is Matt, and he definitely would have been at Chris' party." Well now her and KJ had something to talk about which made her happy, it wasn't just pleasant casualties anymore.
KJ thought about that for a minute. "Matt.... hmm. Cute kid, blonde hair, super nice?" she asked. "I mean, I only met him for like two seconds, but he seems like a keeper, if you're lucky enough to be his girlfriend." She winked at Olivia. "Pretty small world, right? I mean, I know it's a small school, but I feel like it just keeps getting smaller the more I stay here." She laughed. "Which means you should definitely hang out with us theatre people since we have something in common now!"
Olivia smiled, she was lucky, Matt was a catch, at least this girl KJ also thought so which made her a bit proud to be his girlfriend. "Yeah, I am lucky." It made her excited to hear that KJ wanted to hang around with her, Olivia had a hard time making friends since she started at Mcdermott and now it seemed like she was starting to make more and more as the months passed by. "For sure, and I know what you mean... but its nice to not talk to art kids for once."
"Well yeah, we're obviously cooler," KJ teased her, grinning. "Seriously, though, it's nice to have people who aren't theatre majors get involved. Sometimes there is just too much drama - no pun intended, of course." Though Olivia hadn't expressed her reaction out loud, KJ could relate; she was always surprised when other people wanted to hang out with her, which was why she always tried to reach out and be friends with people who didn't feel like they fit in. "I'm sure it'll be quite the experience for you. Theatre really is a different kind of world, you know."
Olivia found herself laugh at the corny joke, she was always lame like that. She caught herself and stopped listening to what else Kj had to say, "Yeah, its kind of exhilarating trying something new, I can't really wait." She adjusted the purse that was slung around her shoulder, "But if everyone is as nice as you and Chris, it should be a lot easier than I thought."
"I like to think we are," KJ assured her. "I mean, we've got a few snobs, but I think you'll find that in any department at this school." She sat back in the chair. "I'm glad you're enthusiastic, though. We can always use that." She smiled sweetly. "Maybe at this rate we'll steal you away from the art majors, huh?" she added, teasingly.
"Well, art will always be my first passion, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy other things too, or even just as much." Olivia always had the outlook on life in a way that you should try whatever you want to, and its okay if you change your mind sometimes. Olivia had lost track of time talking to KJ when she caught a glimpse of her watch she panicked, "Oh shoot, I'm going to be late for work."
Olivia smiled at KJ one last time, "I work at the library, if you're ever there, you should come say hi," She was about to turn, but she forgot to thank her, "Thank-you for all your help... I'll see you around?"
"Of course," KJ said, nodding. "I mean, you can't be late for work just because of me. And I'll make sure to say hi if I see you." She grinned. "Thanks for stopping by again! Hopefully we'll run into each other soon," she said, as she waved after the other girl.
