It was just four days before opening and rehearsals were getting longer. In fact, this one had been going on forever and Charlotte was tired. With a sigh she walked back into the theatre of the PAC after a much needed bathroom break and looked for a place to sit. She wasn’t needed on stage for the moment so was going to take advantage of the moment. Spotting Dylan, she grinned to herself and headed over to drop into the seat next to him. Even though she’d seen him every day during rehearsals, there hadn’t been much time to talk to him and Charlotte found that she missed it. He was always fun to talk to and during the course of the musical, he’d become a good friend.
“So how’s it going, Big Daddy?” she said with a grin, using the name of his character because she not only knew he enjoyed it but she got a kick out of it as well.
“Big Daddy.” Dylan grinned easily as Charlotte slid into the seat next to him. His look making it very clear that he loved being called that. “I’m never going to get sick of hearing that.” he mused with that same charming grin. “Also for the record, since you play my daughter in law? Big Daddy is a lecherous old man. k?”
She rolled her eyes at him in mock exasperation. “No, I’m sure you’re not. And I’ll bet you can find some freshmen girls who would be glad to call you that in exchange for your phone number.” She laughed when he referred to his character as a lecherous old man. “I expected nothing less but no grabbing my ass, got it?”
“This is true, Freshman girls are always eager to get my number,” Dylan agreed with a cocky smirk on his face as he nodded his fair head.”And okay, no grabbing your ass, got it. Can I find other ways to grope you inappropriately or will leering just have to suffice?”
“Maybe you should stick to leering,” she said with a laugh. “KJ might get jealous if you grope me. Shouldn’t you be saving your groping for her? Since she’s your wife and all.” Charlotte was enjoying the conversation, it was light and harmless and a good way to pass the time.
“This is true.” Dylan pretended to mull that point over. “She is the little wife.” he added with another nod of his head. “Okay groping for KJ, leering for you. Your boyfriend isn’t going to kick my ass for the mere suggestion of groping you, is he?”
Charlotte laughed. “No I think you’re okay there. Besides he’s not here right now. He went home for Summer B. As long as you don’t piss me off, I’ll never tell him but if you do, well there’s blackmail right there.” She gave him an evil grin and nudged his shoulder playfully.
Dylan laughed with her, nudging her back .”Okay good I’ll do my best to stay on your good side then.’ he added with a grin. ‘So he’s not here for summer B, how are you doing with that?” He teased lightly. “Pining away? Counting the minutes?”
She rolled her eyes at him. “No, I’m too busy to pine but yeah, I do miss him. He’s from San Francisco so that’s where he is. I’m going home for August break and we’re meeting up in Santa Barbara for a few days since it’s halfway.” Charlotte smiled at the thought. The closer the date got, the more she looked forward to it. “What are you doing for break? Got a vacation planned or anything? Spiriting some lucky girl away to a tropical paradise.”
‘And you can’t wait to see him.“ Dylan summarized when he saw the look on her face as she mentioned meeting up with him. “Cool I hope you have a good time.” He shrugged when she asked about his plans. “Nah, no plans. I was thinking about heading to the city for a few days to visit some friends but I haven’t decided yet.”
Charlotte had no idea what she looked like when she spoke about Auden and if she had, she would have been surprised. Dylan was right though. She couldn’t wait to see him. Even though she knew she’d miss him, she hadn’t expected it to be quite so much. “Okay so you’re right,” she admitted. “I am looking forward to seeing him although I’m not sure what we’re going to do in Santa Barbara, I’ve never been there. And the city, huh?” She didn’t have to ask what city he meant. “that sounds fun. I’m sure your friends will be happy to see you.”
“Nothing wrong with looking forward to seeing your significant other.” Dylan noted. He had been a bit bummed when Charlotte had told him she was seeing someone because it was rare he found someone he got along with so well. “It’s pretty cute actually. And yea.. we’ll see i haven’t made the plans yet. I may just bum around here some more.”
“If I had my way, I’d stow away in my brother’s suitcase and go to Italy,” she said with a sigh. “but both he and Chloe gave me a big fat no when I suggested it. Can’t say that I blame them though. They need a nice romantic vacation after all that’s happened to them over the last few months.” She loved teasing them about tagging along but truthfully she was happy that they were going to spend some extended time together. Things appeared to be back to normal with them which was good but being alone in a romantic setting for three weeks? That could only make things better.
“”Italy.” Dylan tilted his head as he thought that over. “I’d want to stow away in a suitcase for that one too.” he agreed. “But you’re right I don’t know much , just what I overheard from Shae and Mitch but yea they need the vacation. You’ll enjoy your own vacation though. getting to see the boyfriend, all that.”
“That’s true. We’re going drunk whale watching. I mean we’ll be drunk, not the whales,” Charlotte laughed. “of course it won’t take much for me to get drunk. One beer and I’m gone!” She drank so rarely that it didn’t take her long to get a good buzz. In fact she had never actually been drunk, not liking the idea of being out of control.
“Drunk whales might be funny to watch.’ Dylan decided with a laugh of his own. “And ohh so you’re easy to get drunk and take advantage of.” he teased lightly. ‘I’m filing that one away for future reference!”
“I didn’t say that I was easy to take advantage of!” she protested although she couldn’t stop laughing. “And you do that! I’m sure you’ll find a way to use that information someday although I don’t know how.”
“No I just imagined you’d be easy to take advantage of if drunk!” Dylan laughed with her. Charlotte had a good laugh. It was infectious and she got his humor which made her a lot of fun to joke around with. “You’re starting to know me waaay to well Char.”
“Blackmail works both ways, you know,” she said with a raised eyebrow. “Someday you’re going to fall head over heels for someone and I’m going to be able to tell her how you threatened to grope me on stage plus get me drunk and take advantage of me. I’m keeping notes in my head.”
Dylan shrugged off her words, his eyes dancing with mischievousness and amusement as he looked at her. “Go ahead and tell the, If I’m Head over heels for them dear Charlotte. Chances are they wouldn’t be surprised at all.”
He had a point. Any woman that Dylan fell for would have to be used to the way he was. For a moment she found herself wondering what his ex-fiancee had been like. Was she anything like Dylan or a different personality altogether? “That’s true. She’d have already figured out that you were full of crap by that point.” She smiled and then remembered something that she’d read in his journal. “So umm..Emily is getting married? How are you doing with that?”
“Exactly and if she was still with me she’d adore me for it.” Maggie had adored him for that even if they had been just friends at the end of it all and Emily...Even Emily had loved that in the beginning. Speaking of Emily...Dylan pulled a bit of a face as Charlotte mentioned her. “As well as I can be I guess.” he answered truthfully. “I mean it sucks but.. it’s her life.”
Charlotte couldn’t imagine how she would feel if she were in his shoes. It must be hard to learn that the person you were planning on spending the rest of your life was going to marry someone else. “I’m sure it’s hard,” she said. “For what it’s worth, she’s an idiot for letting you go.” Even though she was happy with how her life was going right now, there was a part of Charlotte that wondered how things would have gone if she had met Dylan at another point in time. He was a great guy and she could easily see how a girl could fall for him.
“You’re sweet for saying that.” Dylan smiled over at her. “But it’s okay.” He added as he reached over and squeezed Charlotte’s hand quickly. They didn’t really help but Dylan did appreciate the sympathetic words. He glanced up at the stage. “I think I need to get up there but thanks for that Char really.”
She followed his gaze and nodded. “Yeah, I think they’re looking for you and sure, any time.” She returned the squeeze and shifted her legs so that he could climb over them. “Want to grab some coffee after rehearsal?” Charlotte didn’t really want to be alone for some reason and she’d been enjoying the conversation, hating that it had to be cut short.
“Yea.” Dylan nodded as he stood up, finding he really liked the idea of that. “Not as much fun as getting you drunk and taking advantage” he joked with a quick flash of a grin. “but still fun. Grab me right after, k?”
