Who:Deanna and Auden
What: a first meeting
Where: harper's Cove
Rating: G
Auden didn't usually hang out at Harper Cove. He wasn't a fan of fast food in general, actually; he blamed his mother's influence for that. Ingrid had done her best to instill in him a habit of eating healthy. Aside from his random weaknesses, he usually kept to it pretty well.
However, it was Monday evening, and he'd missed dining hall hours; he'd been working the reference desk at the library sort of an awkward shift, but hours at the library tended to get cut back over the summer, and he was taking what he could. By the time his shift ended, it was too late to head to the dining hall, but he didn't really feel like heading back to his room and ordering food. Harper Cove was a step up from that, so as he left the library, he headed down.
It wasn't too crowded; Auden automatically glanced around for anyone he might know, but he didn't see anyone. Sighing, he headed over to the food selections; he bypassed ordering a burger or fries and instead picked up a bag of Doritos, along with a bottle of Coke. As he turned to head toward the cashier, he nearly bumped into someone. "Sorry," he said automatically, giving the girl a slight, apologetic smile.
It had been suggested to Deanna that if she ever wanted to find a fairly crowded place to spend an evening that had better food than the dining hall that she should check out Harpers Cove. So when Monday night came and she was starving she'd headed over there just too see what was up. She'd ended up running into a group of people she'd met in one of her classes and she was in the process of getting a bottle of diet coke after she'd finished her dinner. She turned when she felt someone brush across her arm and she offered a million dollar dimpled smile when she caught sight of the guy apologizing. "No problem at all." She assured him. "You barely touched me."
"Okay," he said; he nodded at her, and then moved over to the cashier's line, which was only a few feet away. He didn't think he knew the girl, but he didn't know a lot of people, so that wasn't anything surprising. He looked toward the front of the line; even though he'd initially not thought it was crowded, the line seemed kind of long.
If there was anything Deanna hated it was standing quietly in a line. She wasn't a nervous talker nor was she a babbler but she also never failed to find an opportunity to strike up a conversation with someone. "So is it me or is the line completely disproportionate to the amount of people it looks like are in here?"
"It's not just you," Auden replied, glancing back at her. "Looks like everyone had the same idea at the same time." He tapped his fingers restlessly against his Coke bottle; it wasn't that he was nervous, exactly, but he was never completely at ease around new people, either.
"Could be worse I suppose. at least it's for better food than the dining hall offers." Deanna mused as she pushed her blonde curls off her shoulders and over her back.
He grinned at that. "That's true." The dining hall wasn't exactly known for its great food; half of what made Harper Cove so successful was the desire for edible food.
"And that leads to the very obvious question of" Deanna glanced up at him with a curious look, her blue eyes taking him in as if he was the most interesting person in the world right then. He wasn't bad looking and that was reason enough to keep the conversation going. "Are you avoiding dining hall food or did you just miss the serving hours?"
"Missed the hours," Auden responded, lifting his shoulders slightly. "Shit happens, and all. What about you?"
"Didn't even try to make the hours." Deanna admitted as she flashed him a playfully sheepish look. "Someone told me in one of my classes that this was the place to go if I wanted to find a large group of people...they were very right."
"Missed the hours," Auden responded, lifting his shoulders slightly. "Shit happens, and all. What about you?”
"Didn't even try to make the hours." Deanna admitted as she flashed him a playfully sheepish look. "Someone told me in one of my classes that this was the place to go if I wanted to find a large group of people...they were very right."
"Apparently, it's also the place to go if you want to wait in a long line," he responded, amused.
"that's true. But there are advantages to waiting in long lines." Deanna noted as the line moved forward very very slowly and slightly. "For instance you got to meet me and I'm a pretty fun person to know."
He smiled at her. "Fair enough. Although we haven't technically met yet," he pointed out. "What's your name?"
"Minor technicality and so very easily remedied." Deanna all but grinned. "I'm Deanna "She introduced herself and held out her free hand to him. "And you?"
"Auden." He took her hand, giving her a brief, yet firm, shake. "Nice to meet you."
"Auden. Now that's an interesting name." Deanna mused as she tilted her head as if pondering that while brushing her bangs off of her face. "A little unique and all that. It's really nice to meet you."
Auden's shoulders went up a bit. He decided to skip explaining that it was actually his middle name ... it would've been sort of pointless. "Yeah. My mom, she's kind of out there. You know the poet, W.H. Auden?" His lips tilted slightly. "She's a fan."
Deanna racked her brain for the poet he was speaking of and then she just shrugged slightly sheepishly as she admitted her defeat. "I have to admit if I didn't have to read it in school... well i know very little about poetry. "
"Ah. Well." The line inched forward again, and they moved with it. "Not a big deal if you don't." Actually, considering his friends and his girlfriend, Auden managed to do a good job of surrounding himself with everyone but poets. "I'm guessing your major isn't English, then?" he inquired curiously.
"Not a chance." She smiled as she spoke her words. "I enjoy a good book from time to time but not enough to make it a major. I'm an art major more or less. ... is yours English?"
"Yeah. Poetry, mostly, but I like literature, too." Auden pushed one hand absently through his hair as he regarded her. "Art's interesting," he added, thinking of his mother. "What kind are you into?"
"I have a concentration in design." Deanna explained. "I want to be a fashion designer which is why I say art more or less, it's the broad term but... I’m like just barley under the umbrella for the major."
"Ah. I get it." Auden nodded his understanding. "Well, that's cool. I mean, design's creative and all."
"Yea, it is. It's fun for me at least. I need a basic understanding of drawing for it to relaly work out though, which are the classes I get to take this year. "She was actually looking forward to that and it showed when she spoke. "So who knows I might turn into an artist yet!"
"It could happen," Auden agreed, shooting her a grin.
He had a nice smile when he chose to use it Deanna decided as she saw his grin. it was infectious even so she found herself flashing one back. "Okay I coul be really wrong about that but one of the guys I work with mentioned a roomate who was an English major but he called him Auds... That wouldn't be you would it? Are you Jeremy's roommate?"
Amusement crossed Auden's features. "Yep," he confirmed. "Unless there's another Auden on campus. You're working at the bookstore?"
"Cool!" Deanna was really a little relieved that she'd been right in her assumption, because really what could have been worse than the awkward if she hadn't been? "And Yes, I'm working at the bookstore. It's pretty fun so far, to be honest."
"Yeah, Jeremy says it's not a bad gig," Auden agreed.
"Time to goof off and the manager isn't too bad. " Deanna noted. 'The co-workers are a definite plus."
"Sounds cool. I'm working at the library, so ... not exactly the same kind of atmosphere." Auden grinned a little. "I can slack off on the computer or whatever between helping people, though. So it could be worse."
"I'd go nuts working in the library." Deanna admitted with a impish smile. "The having to be quiet thing would be torture for me."
"Yeah. I'm kind of a quiet person anyway, so ... doesn't bother me," Auden admitted.
"I could tell actually." Her voice was slightly teasing as he made that admittance. "Which isn't a bad thing the world needs quiet people so us loud ones have people to talk to."
"Yeah. Of course, some quiet people don't always talk back," he returned, amused.
"They do eventually." Deanna joked. "If you bother them enough."
Auden laughed; it was true, especially in his case. He thought of Jeremy, and how Jeremy had persisted in drawing Auden out of his shell, when they had first become friends. "It's true," he said aloud.
""YOu know from experience?" She asked. There wa something in the way he laughed that tol Deanna that this wasn't he first time someone had simply made him talk.
"Yeah. Jeremy, actually," he told her. "We've been friends since high school. Jeremy was pretty persistent in wanting to be friends with me. I was the new, quiet kid and Jeremy was ... Jeremy."
Jeremy. Deanna nodded at that thought. "He seems the type to do that." She mused with a soft laugh. 'he's pretty fun."
"He is," Auden agreed wryly. Sometimes too much fun.
"Must make an interesting best friend for you." She observed as she watched the guy ahead of Auden pay. "total opposites, right?"
"Pretty much," Auden said. He stepped up to the cashier, glancing at Deanna sideways as he added, "But it makes it interesting, to say the least."
"I bet it does." Deanna agreed as she stepped forward to pay. "I should get back to my friends." She admitted as she glanced back at the table she had been fitting at. "It was nice to meet you though, Auden." She smiled flirtatiously. “Really nice. "
Auden returned her smile, though his was simply friendly, nothing more. "It was nice meeting you too," he replied. "I guess I'll see you around?"
"Probably." Deanna agreed as she headed off to joing her laughing group of friends.
