It wasn't long after Chris made his journal post that he made up his mind to cut his hair. At first he thought it would be hard, and a difficult decision. There was a point in his life that he vowed never to cut his hair, but he was in need of a change.
The past year had been great for Chris but it didn't come with disappointments, part of that was realizing that he needed to grow up. In person Chris would be big to talk about how cutting his hair was starting new, and fresh but really it was to defy a girl he once liked. KJ had told him on occasion how she liked his hair, and this motivated him to chop it off, maybe then he could attract women that were different from her, girls that actually liked him more than a friend.
Luckily Matt had agreed to join him for support, as much as Chris wanted to cut his hair his stomach lurched at the thought. He had his hair this long since he was 10, and he never imagined cutting it all of. He looked over to his friend unsure if he should enter the hair dressers.
When Chris had told Matt that he wanted to cut his hair, Matt was surprised, but he respected his friend's decision. However, he could tell that Chris was still a little apprehensive about it, so Matt wasn't surprised that Chris had jumped at the chance to have Matt accompany him.
As they approached the entrance, Chris looked over at Matt; they had known each other long enough that Matt could read his expression. "Seriously," Matt said, for probably the fifteenth time, "are you sure you want to do this, Chris? It's your hair." Matt liked his own hair, and though he'd toyed around with the idea of cutting it, he'd never really actually decided to do it; plus, he thought Liv might not like that so much.
"I'm a man... right?" Chris said half heartedly, he felt as if he was acting like a child and this whole moment was about growing up and taking a risk. "I mean I can do it right... its just hair." Chris didn't want to sound like a girl as he entered the salon, but to him it was more than hair, it was part of him.
A kind woman at the reception desk took his name and asked what services he was looking for. "A cut." Chris said bitterly, the woman smiled understanding the situation she would know the right thing to do. With his time set up which would be shortly Chris moved to sit down in the waiting area.
The chairs were plain and boring, and there was a slew of fashion magazines around. He wondered why there were never men's magazines.
Matt sat down next to Chris, shaking his head. "It'll grow back," he added, helpfully, glancing around disinterestedly at the magazines and instead pulled out one of his textbooks from the backpack he had brought with him. "What?" Matt asked when Chris gave him a look. "I'm not into watching people cut their hair off. No offense but taking any interest in the way people cut hair seems like a girly thing to me." He paused. "But cutting your hair isn't girly," he amended.
Chris couldn't help but laugh, "You really are delightfully confusing you know that?" by this time Chris was well versed in understanding Matt's rambling. "But yeah I know what you mean..." He immediately wished he brought a book with him. Instead out of pure curiosity he picked up a women's magazine to see what the buzz was about. "Look," Chris said flipping through the pages, "How to get your perfect man."
"Oh, yes, the solution to everything," Matt deadpanned, shaking his head. "I'm sure my sister reads this stuff, but it sounds disgusting." He read through a paragraph. "And half of this stuff isn't even true, really." Or maybe it was for older guys. Or guys that weren't Matt. He shrugged. "And delightfully confusing? Really, Chris?" He shot his friend a look. "What is that supposed to mean?"
Chris cocked an eyebrow at his best friend, "What if Olivia read something like this to get you!" he enjoyed teasing Matt, sometimes it was easy. He chuckled at Matt's face, "You are just thoroughly entertaining that's all." He patted his friend on the back. He now looked to the woman who was getting her hair cut, she was nearing the end of her session and that'd soon be Chris in her place. He bit his lip trying not to think about it.
"I doubt it," Matt said, shaking his head skeptically at the magazine. "And hey, if I'm that entertaining maybe I should start charging you by the minute." He smirked at his friend, and then recognized his concerned look over at the woman. "You know we can always walk out of here right now if you want," he told Chris.
"No." Chris said stubbornly almost ignoring Matt's first comment, "I need to do this." with that the woman approached him scissors in hand, he turned to Matt, "Wish me luck?" his expression was unsure, but the woman seemed confident enough.
After about 15 minutes most of Chris' hair laid on the floor around the chair he sat in. He refused to look in the mirror until it was all over, finally the woman swung the chair around for him to see. It was short but not too short, enough that he could still 'play' with it as the hairdresser said. He approached Matt unsure of what he thought of it yet, he searched Matt's expression in hopes of the outcome being good.
"Good luck," Matt said, and then corrected himself, "I mean, break a leg." He gave Chris a reassuring smile and then turned to his textbook; he knew it wouldn't take too long, anyway.
And soon enough, Chris was before him, and Matt looked up; it was different, yes, but as Matt appraised him, he nodded in approval and smiled. "You look mature," were the first words out of Matt's mouth, but his smile was teasing. "Seriously, not bad."
Chris approached a mirror that hung on the wall near the coat racks to investigate. He ran his hand through his short hair for the first time, it felt odd, he then adjusted his collar looking at himself from top to bottom, "You really think so?" Chris said trying to see what Matt saw, but it was hard when you're used to looking at yourself in the mirror.
He quickly paid for the haircut and thanked the woman for doing what he thought was a good job, only time would tell. Chris wondered what his brother Justin would say, or even what KJ would say-- since she gave him the suggestion to NOT cut his hair. "Do you think I'll get noticed by more girls? I mean if I look more mature some girls like that kind of thing... right?"
In spite of himself, Matt rolled his eyes. "Is that the only reason you cut your hair, Chris? To see if girls would notice you?" He shrugged. "I don't know, I'm not a girl. But if it makes you feel better about yourself, maybe girls will see it too." He glanced at Chris and shrugged again. "You do look a little older," he noted, a bit jealously; Matt idly wondered what it would be like if he cut his own hair, but he couldn't imagine himself with hair as short as Chris's now.
"Okay, okay..." Chris admitted, "It's not just for the girls, but its important I look good if I want to stop thinking about KJ." Chris figured that this would solve his problem with KJ, maybe he'd be noticed by someone new, and it'd magically be easier to get over her.
Chris noted the jealousy, his gaze now looking at his friend with a sly grin, "Are you jealous Matty?"
Matt could see how changing a look on the outside could help work through things on the inside. He merely nodded, until Chris's expression changed. His blue eyes widened. "No?" he replied, though it didn't come out nearly as confidently as he'd liked. "Okay, maybe a little. But I don't think I could cut my hair that short, dude. I wouldn't look mature. I'd just look... weird." He shrugged.
Chris laughed and patted his friends back, after he put on his jacket. "You were just born to wear medium length hair forever." He felt the need to continue the joke as the walked out of the salon, "But really man, thanks... I needed this." Chris' voice grew serious, he had high hopes now for the summer, maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all.
Letting out a hearty laugh, Matt shook his head. "No problem, man," he replied, giving Chris another reassuring smile as they gathered their belongings and headed back.
