KJ sighed as she paced the hallways of the PAC. Her audition was coming up very soon and she was nervous. Auditions usually didn't scare her too much, but when they involved singing, well... that was a different story. She wasn't the singer. Charlotte was a singer. Even Chloe didn't count singing as her strong suit - KJ knew this because they'd had this discussion many a time. It was kind of out of her comfort zone, and when it came to acting and the stage, that wracked KJ's nerves more than anything else.
Clutching her selected sheet music, KJ glanced at it, frowning at the creases her fingers were making on the edges from holding it so hard, and took a deep breath. She forced herself to stop pacing and leaned against the wall, trying to focus on something to distract her. The bulletin board was a nice shade of yellow. People were offering all kinds of lessons - piano, guitar, or offering their instrument services for things like weddings and such.
KJ let out another sigh, and went back to pacing. She was startled, however, after a voice she wasn't familiar with reacted to her sigh. Down the hall, at the other end, stood someone she wasn't quite familiar with on sight, so she began to pace her way in that direction.
Play auditions... Dylan found these infinitely less stressful than work auditions had been. in fact he'd already breezed through his and as whistling as he walked down the hallway. he highly doubted he'd get a part, being so new to the program but he'd enjoyed getting it up there and belting it out like he always did. he was wondering what he was going to do with the rest of the afternoon and was contemplating sneaking back into the PAC to watch the rest of the auditions. Shae was in there and if all else failed Dylan figured he could just bug his big sister for awhile.
He heard the sigh all the way down the hallway and he couldn't help but comment on it. "That worried about the audition?" he called out in a friendly way. "I'm sure it can't be that nerve wracking."
KJ shook her head as she approached. "The acting isn't so bad. It's the singing," she elaborated. "I'm not exactly known for my singing strengths, you know?" As she got closer, she glanced curiously at the guy. "Are you new around here? I don't think I've seen you around before. I'm KJ, by the way. KJ Hart - I'm a sophomore, and obviously, theatre major." She grinned; there was no better distraction than meeting new people.
"Ah so you're not a singer." Dylan nodded. It was a common complaint with actors though and many had a better sound than they thought. 'The thing about most musicals." He pointed out. "is that you don't have to be the best sinder for a lot of them...Sure alot focus on the singing but alot focus on the character and the song if you can see a song... you've got something in your pocket." he shrugged as she said she hadn't seen him around. "Hi KJ I'm Dylan. And yea I'm new, started grad school this semester."
"Dylan..." The name sounded familiar; she thought maybe she might have heard it or seen it around the journals before. "OH. Altar Boyz!" she exclaimed. "Oh my God, Dylan Garrett! Hiii," she added, laughing. "Sorry. I just had a fangirl moment. I'm sorry." KJ shook her head, but she was still grinning. "So what brings you to the little art school in the middle of nowhere? Other than the fact that your awesome sister is here, and all."
Dylan outright grinned as she exclaimed over him. Nothing would ever make the fact that he loved being fangirled over go away. "Yea that's me and that's cool. i totally support fangirl moments. And that's pretty much all that brought me here. The fact that Shae's here. I wanted to be around my niece when she gets here."
KJ's eyes lit up. "Oh, I'm so excited for her," she commented. "She's going to be a great mom. And I bet you'll be a great uncle, too." Not that KJ really knew Dylan, so to speak, but the fact that he simply wanted to be around for his niece spoke a lot. "Sounds like exciting times all around for you." She grinned again, the nervousness not necessarily forgotten but definitely placed on the back burner for now. "Hey, if I actually manage to snag a part, maybe we'll be in the musical together! 'Cause, you know. It's not like you won't get a part." Though the last big production proved that statement wrong - Chloe was experienced and talented and famous and she hadn't gotten anything - KJ felt that it probably wouldn't happen twice in a row.
"Oh Im going to be a kick ass uncle." Dylan agreed, feeling no desire to be humble about that. he already loved Miranda and couldn't wait for her to be born, he hand no shame in that fact and he was having a blast playing uncle to Aaron in the meantime. "Hey I might not get a part." he protested. "But yea it'd be fun to be n the musical together. There's no better way to meet people than to do a show."
Laughing, KJ shook her head at Dylan's unabashed pride. She liked that about him. "It would be fun. Then I can tell all my friends back home that I was in the same musical as Dylan Garrett, and they'd all get jealous." She smiled. "But seriously, that's definitely one of my more favorite parts of a show - getting to know all the people in it." With a sigh, KJ held up her music. "Which is why I'm so worried about this audition. I'm not usually this nervous," she admitted. "But, again, the singing."
"It'd make you a total rock star." Dylan agreed with a laugh. "I'm pretty good for bragging rights." he added with a smirk. "I kid of course, okay not really I am but that's neither here nor there. You're right it's one of the best thing about being in a show. And come on don't be nervous, It's auditioning in front of people you've taken classes from who know your abilities already right? Can you really disappoint?"
KJ thought on that for a minute, a smile forming on her face as she realized the truth of his words. "I guess you're right," she said, slowly. "I mean, they have seen me audition for other things. And they let me have some pretty decent parts before. I just... is the fact that I don't sing going to outweigh my talent? I don't know." KJ shrugged, but strangely enough, she didn't seem as nervous as she had been before. "As long as I get a part, however small, I'll be fine with it." Heck, even if she only had one speaking part, that'd be fine.
"Maybe you can put in a good word for me," she added, grinning. She knew they didn't know each other very well but he was Ms. Garrett's brother.
"I think my putting in a word for you would hinder your chances." Dylan teased. While his tone was light and joking there was some truth to his words, he knew that if he put in a word for an sctress Shae and Mitch both were more apt to think it was because he thought she was cute more than based on any actual talent. They knew him very well.
"I'm sure you'll get some sort of part." He assured her. "And even if you don't working on the production can be fun too, right?"
"I guess." Truth be told, KJ had never not gotten a part in any production - even as a freshman, she'd had small parts here and there. "I've never really had the opportunity to work on a production, though. That might be interesting." But not in this musical, though; Footloose was one that KJ would definitely want to be part of.
"At any rate. I hope I get to be involved somehow." KJ smiled. "And I hope that means I get to hang out with you, too." In the back of her mind KJ realized her words could be construed as slightly flirtatious, but really, it was just exciting to be able to meet Dylan Garrett (!) in person. "You're pretty cool."
"I like to think I am." Dylan nodded with a confident smirk. "And you never know, i'm sure if you're around I will be too." he shrugged. She seemed nice enough but she was far too young to really be flirting with. Or at least that was Dylan's thinking right then.
KJ laughed. "Is that the nice way of saying that you know you're awesome?" She was smiling though; it amused her. "Well, I guess I will be seeing Your Awesomeness around then. You do realize that if I get a part in the musical, you're going to have to help me with my singing, right?"
"Yea pretty much." Dylan grinned. "And you probably will see my awesomeness around...I don't know about helping you singing though." he added with a smirk. 'i mean if you're as bad as you think you are... is there help for you?"
"Oh, burn," KJ said, feigning a pout. "I'd like to think I'm helpable," she finally said. "Which I guess means that there is hope for me after all." She looked over at Dylan, appraising him and nodding. "I think we'll keep you around for a while. You're pretty good at being a confidence booster."
"it is one of my many talents I'm told." Dylan joked , lifting a brow as he caught her appraising look. "Nice to know you'll keep me around for it. I'd hate for you to dismiss me completley."
"I wouldn't do something like that!" KJ protested. "Someone else, yeah, but not me." She checked the clock on the wall and sighed. "Well, I'd stay and chat some more but I think I have to go face my personal impending doom here in a few minutes." Once again, she sighed heavily. "But thanks for the distraction. And the confidence boost. I needed it." She flashed a small grin over to Dylan.
"Anytime." Dylan assured her with a grin. 'And break a leg!"
Having started off to the door where the auditions were being held, KJ stopped and turned, giving Dylan one last smile over her shoulder. "Thanks. I'll see you around, Your Awesomeness."
