In many ways, Lauren was still riding the high of her wedding, even though now it had been two weeks ago. Their honeymoon was already over - physically, anyway, since they were back home, Andrew had gone back to work, and Lauren had to return in a few days - but Lauren didn't feel anything wearing off. In fact, she was downright giddy as she entered Bed, Bath, and Beyond, intent on redeeming a gift card she'd gotten for her bridal shower. She and Andrew had decided they needed a new sheet set, some pillows, and so Lauren was on a mission. If she picked up some other things on the way, though... she wouldn't be opposed to that.
She made a beeline for the pillow section, and for a moment, she had to stop and take it all in. Lauren had forgotten how the sheer volume of products could be overwhelming. While she took a minute to reorient herself, she recognized a figure standing in the same aisle and smiled. "Hello," she greeted him, as she took a step closer, also intrigued by some pillows behind him.
Bed ,Bath Beyond was not exactly Mitch’s favorite store. In fact the only times he’d spend time there was if Shae was dragging him or his Mom or some other female in his life. The Christmas holidays surrounded by his family had gotten Shae on a bit of a nesting kick (or at least his mother had gotten Shae on a bit of a nesting kick) and once the house was free of relatives Mitch had been sent to find a few things that Shae wanted organizer wise for the baby’s room.
He was nowhere near the things that Shae wanted, having gotten distracted by some random gadget that he was pondering on an aisle endcap and he glanced up when he heard someone say hello. He recognized the woman, if only vaugley from campus so he grinned at her as Mitch often did. “Hey, did you have a good Holiday?” he asked good-naturedly as he set down what he was looking at.
"I did," she replied, smiling back. It was amusing to her that he was at this store, since she knew from experience that this wasn't exactly the kind of store that men enjoyed spending time in. In fact, Lauren almost recognized the lost, distracted look that Mitch had about him. "I, um, actually just got back from my honeymoon." She admitted this with a smile and a blush, but she was still pleased to tell anyone who would listen.
"What about you? Did Shae send you here?" she inquired, lightly. As she spoke to him, she remembered where she'd seen him before, and made the connection to the barbeque and to Shae.
“Oh Wow.” Mitch’s grin grew as she mentioned her honeymoon. Had he known that Lauren was engaged? Chances were high that he’d heard it in passing or over the journals for the school. “That’s great.” He noted. “Okay the honeymoon being over and school starting again not so great but the wedding? Congrats!”
He laughed as she asked if Shae had sent him there. “And yea, she did. Do I look that out out of place?”
"Thanks," Lauren said, smiling widely as she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "And... yeah, you kinda do look a wee bit out of place." She laughed, though. "If you want, I can help?" she offered. "It might reduce the chances you pick up the wrong thing. Then you wouldn't have to come back."
“No help required.” Mitch assured her. ‘In fact I’m kind of hoping I pick up the wrong thing.” He added jokingly. “Then she won’t send me back!” he glanced around. “The sheer volume of junk in these stores always amazes me. I mean such random things you know? “
Lauren had to grin at Mitch's logic. She supposed, in a male mindset, that it made perfect sense. "I know!" she agreed. "In fact, I had to stop and just look 'round a little more slow, you know? Otherwise it'd be like sensory overload!" She nodded and glanced at the pillows. "It's gonna take forever to pick out some pillows, I have a feelin'."
"The last time I ws here with Shae was to buy stuff for the new house." Mitch mused. "She took I think an hour to decide on a set of pillows so ea I'm bettin' it will take you forever, me? I'd grab the ones that look comfy and go." he picked up something decorated with tassles and shrugged. '"Then again these aren't for comfort are they?"
"They are," Lauren agreed, frowning at the tassles. That was too fussy for her. "But, you know, the pillows have to match with what you've already got," she told Mitch in a playfully patient tone. "Sometimes that takes a while." Lauren eyed a teal pillow and reached out to touch it, testing its softness. "So what's your mission?" After a thoughtful pause, she added, "And by the way, how is Shae?"
“We didn’t have much to match it with yet.” Mitch countered with a soft chuckle as he set the pillow back on the shelf. “Anyway she’s doing good, my Mom got her on a kick that we need to get a room for Miranda done like yesterday so I’m on the hunt of organizational things.” Mitch shrugged. “I kind of thought that that was what drawers are for but I learned with Rachel that it’s not good to argue with the woman pregnant with your child.”
"Miranda?" Lauren asked, tilting her head curiously. "You guys chose a name already? That's awesome," she said, smiling. "That's such a pretty name, too. Congratulations... that makes it seem that much more real." She sighed, and then remembered the other half of Mitch's sentence. "Oh, yeah. I guess stores like this make a business of making organizational things, though, huh?"
"Miranda Lynne." Mitch grinned with a note of pride as he said the name they'd chosen aloud. "After my Mom and Shae's god mother, which I think is why Mom was so up on decorating and buying stuff for her when they were here, she'd excited that she has a namesake now."
"Miranda Lynne," Lauren repated, smiling. "That's beautiful. I'm so excited for you two." She nodded at Mitch's explanation. "I'm sure she's honored. I'm sure your mom would be bugging you two anyway, namesake or not."
Absentmindedly stroking a light coral pillow, she asked, "You have another son, right? Or is that something I'm makin' up as I go along here?"
"Oh she'd be bugging." Mitch agreed. "But it's worse with the namesake thing." he rolled his eyes. "and Yea, I have a son, Aaron he's 7. You met him him running around at the barbecue. So no, you're not making that up"
"Oh, good. Didn't want you to think I was crazy or somethin'," Lauren said, laughing. "He excited, though? About his sister? Y'all have a nice little family going on," she commented. It was something Lauren wanted for herself, especially now that she'd finally gotten 'proper' and gotten married.
"Nope not crazy." Mitch laughed with her. "We do have a nice little family, I must admit." he was beaming with pride as he spoke, Mitch really couldn't help it he always looked that way when he spoke of Aaron, of his family really these days. "And hes' excited beyond beleif, he wanted a brother at first but decided a sister would be okay, he did tell his Mom though that if she ever had a baby that she needed to make sure it was a boy."
"That's really somethin'," was all Lauren could say. She couldn't help but feel a little jealous of what Mitch and Shae had. It was just the next step in hers and Andrew's journey, she decided. She saw the obvious pride in Mitch's expression and smiled. "I'm glad all of that is working out beautifully," she told Mitch. "I bet you must be excited. How much longer do you have to wait for Miranda?"
"Till Spring." Mitch admitted. "At this rate her room's going to be ready long before she is." he shrugged. "I don't mind that though, it's fun for me too, although I think it was easier for me to stomach everything for Aaron's room back in the day since I had more of an idea of what to do about little boys, you know?"
"Yeah," Lauren agreed. "It's a good thing I have a little brother, or else I'd be just as worried if I was waitin' on a little boy." She smiled. "But you've already got 'Dad' experience, so I'm sure Miranda's going to be in excellent hands." Her look was meant to be soothing for the slight anxiety that she could feel Mitch was harboring. "And you've got a little helper, too. That'll make things easier." Thinking about that for a moment, she then added, "Hopefully."
"I've got Shae, she'll make it run smoothly." Mitch noted easily, he was anxious, knowing less about girls than boys but Lauren was right he had a little helper and he had Shae, between all of them it'd work out.
"For sure," she agreed. "That's definitely a plus." It was cute the way he regarded her and she was glad Shae and Mitch had each other. "Well, if there's anything I can do for y'all along the way, just let me know, alright? I'd be glad to help." Lauren smiled agreeably and added, "That includes sorting through organizational things." Her smile widened.
"Okay, Lauren." Mitch's voice was light and teasing. "I will allow you to help me sort through organizational things , since your eyes just lit up as you said that, and really I suppose you're right if I get the right things it'd make life easier all around."
She laughed, the sound light, as Mitch conceded. "I promise, it will be painless. If you want, you can even pick out a pillow or two for me. I'm sure Andrew - that's my husband - will be thrilled that I didn't pick all girly colors." Lauren smiled and then asked, "Did she send a list with you?" She was almost positive she would, but Lauren made it a personal policy not to assume anything.
"It's a deal" Mitch agreed easily as he rummaged in a pocket for the list shae had handed him. "If you can make this store painless than i will help pick colors that your new hubby won't cringe at." he handed the list over. "Anf of course she sent a list, what woman in her right mind wouldn't?"
Taking the list, Lauren perused through it, noting to herself that Shae definitely seemed to be the ambitious type. "I was just checkin'," Lauren told Mitch, smiling. "And come on. If we're gonna complete this list today we have a lot to do." She glance down at it again, and then back up at the store's sections, and then left the pillows for later.
Mitch laughed as he watched lauren read the list and he nodded. "Lead the way" he gestured in front of him. "I put the challenge of completing this task in your hand." he added jokingly as they made their way deeper into the store.
