Mary looked up at that. "I wanted to help people, I suppose. And I enjoyed the practical aspects of it, having a problem and fixing it. In all honesty I don't know if things had been different if I might not have gone into a different field. Banking or something, but it was a time when we were in the first war and it seemed I ought to do something that was useful." She shrugged. "I like it. It's always something new I didn't have the scores to become a healer so I became a mediwitch instead. It's more immediate in a way and more satisfying. Either emergency medicine or practical care rather than being stuck in a ward all the time."
She considered him for a moment. "Have you thought about it as a career? Or had you before all of this?"
