When the sun rose on Monday morning, it looked as if it would be a nice peaceful day. Of course, nothing was more true than the saying that looks could be deceiving. Because as the shopping district filled steadily with customers over the length of the morning and through to lunch rushes, by the time the afternoon started to drag on, things seemed to be much different. With the loud crack of Apparition, Alecto Carrow appeared in the middle of Diagon Alley, quickly followed by three more -- the arrivals of Benedict Mulciber, Brian Avery and Rodolphus Lestrange. Almost immediately, there was the shock of a blue streak of light zooming through the sky, finding its destination in an already abandoned store front before there was the sound of an explosion and the store went up in flames. Mulciber lowered his wand for a moment. Then he said, speaking to the other three, "Let's make a statement, shall we?" From then, no time was wasted. Another stream of blue, and then red, followed after that, crisscrossing with the violet that jetted from Carrow's wand. A scream filled the air, followed by more, as the nearest passerby realised just what they were in the middle of and chaos erupted. People grabbed for their loved ones and ran for their lives, looking for a good place to hide -- or even just a way out from the madness. Some weren't as lucky as others, struck down from one curse or another and left injured in the street. Avery cast a Dark Mark up into the sky, as if there could be any doubt whatsoever as to just what was happening. But this was more than just an attack, it was a message. And the message was fear. The message was that Voldemort being dead did not change things; they would continue to wreak as much havoc as they could get away with until they were all imprisoned or dead. With all the chaos and that sign lingering in the sky, it didn't take long for five Aurors to arrive on the scene, wands at ready. Since the Dark Mark had first appeared over the Ministry in the very beginning of June, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Gawain Robards had collaborated to make sure the DMLE was ready any time one appeared. Mulciber noticed their arrival first and shot off a quick Avada Kedavra, then ducking as an Auror attempted to hex him in return. As the Auror the curse was meant for dodged, it hit a panicked witness as she'd tried to get out of the way herself. A man stopped briefly to check, but kept moving once he'd found that she was very much dead. People ran from and to shops, searching for places to disapparate from, or cowering behind objects if they could as light of different colours flew, Carrow taking a hit in the arm that left a deep enough gash before throwing one of her own back that sent the Auror off his feet and through the window of a store. With a bit of a laugh, Avery sent an explosive curse through a random cafe; the effect was pretty much instant. Another killing curse flew across the battle grounds, hitting an Auror dead in the chest and leaving him to crumple to the ground, Lestrange responsible. Another Auror fell to a dark curse, leaving three to four, which wasn't very fair at all. But, then again, those were the sort of odds the Death Eaters liked -- a sure win. |
