Forge stared long and hard at Nathaniel then finally back to Eva. "I settled you because I didn't want you falling into the same trap I had," Jon said, talking exclusively to Eva now. "I used my power, the power entrusted to me by my tribe, for vengeance. And the thing about magic is... it always comes with a price. And I paid that price in flesh and bone, Eva. But it didn't stop there. I'd opened a door to darkness that I couldn't close. But, I thought that if I kept you out of that world... my sins would die with me. But they won't," he admitted. "From the first moment Mateo stepped his little paw into the astral plane, I knew that I'd cursed us. And the only thing holding the demons at bay is the fact that I'm still alive," Forge explained almost sheepishly. "Since that day, I've been quietly trying to break it," Forge told his daughter. "Hell, maybe this librarian knows what he's talking about," Jon relented slightly. "You've been making plenty of great decisions without me for years. You'll do what's right," he told her with the greatest sense of pride his voice was able to muster. "So, Mr. Zale," Jon said and finally looked back toward Nathaniel. "My father always said crows from the west were a bad omen, but my mother said they brought life magic. Which are you, Nate, a good crow or a bad one?"
