"If it was murder," Nate stated, he wanted it to be clear - he still had no idea what happened to her. She could have been living on a ranch in Montana for all he knew. Except, Nathaniel did have a feeling and it was a particularly nasty gut feeling that didn't bode well for the woman. "The subterfuge was only because I didn't know who to trust and I still don't," he mused looking to the board that had several important figures of Northchester's names upon it. "And don't misunderstand me," Nate turned to correct. "I don't just leave. It's true my work takes me to many different places, but I hardly fit in most places anyway," his inability to be anything but honest with Eva had shown itself again. "I wasn't raised with mutants and I'm not a huge fan of normies," Nate explained. "If it makes you feel any better, I'd already considered the possibility of leaving Brayden at boarding school. He deserves to be somewhere he'll be accepted. Not in Iowa with my ex-wife," Christ he was oversharing. "Anyway, as you're discovering, I generally wear out my welcome fairly quickly," Nathaniel said and took the picture back from Eva.
"Yes, detectives and arcanists, and Thors are all well and good but they aren't people I can trust," Nathaniel argued. "This is a close, tight-knit community and those I understand very well. The woman who served me my coffee this morning already knew I was the new librarian and that I had a son attending the school," Nate said and tacked Ruby's picture back up. "Bad gas travels fast in a small town," he said quietly as an afterthought.
"Also, none of this watered-down nonsense," Nathaniel turned back toward Eva, obvious annoyance in his eyes. "I've felt your abilities, Eva. The first time I touched your hand they smacked me across my face, just like you want to right now," he said and his frustration gave way to a small smirk. "I'd have seen them sooner but they're not just dormant, you've somehow locked them down. But I touched them and I've already been affected," he added with a chuckle. "I'm not normally this wordy or forthcoming with new friends, Eva," he shared with a twinkle of manic energy in his eyes. "Without even knowing it, you've magically transferred your ideals of truth and justice onto me," he said with a laugh. "Which is how I know I can trust you - magic is a reflection of one's inner self. And your magic is as genuine as I've ever seen," Nate offered.
