There was something unmistakable about the sound of a charcoal pencil against heavy paper and Piotr knew he would never tire of it. And while paint applied to canvas felt more sophisticated, it lacked a certain resistance he sometimes desired. Good for lofty dreams and airy ideals, but today the Russian preferred to be grounded. He wanted his hands in the dirt, the grease actually – but as far away from an engine as possible. He was frustrated with the nature of mechanics – one piece of machinery stopped working; you simply tore a chunk from another. Replaceable parts allowed for progress, the boy who repaired tractors before he was old enough to drive them knew this. But art, creativity, couldn’t be replaced so easily. What would this charcoal representation of two figures and an overgrown evergreen do for anyone? Pete wasn’t sure, it made him smile and that was enough. There was no other drawing in his collection that looked exactly like this one, no similar sketch he could snap a line from and enhance this one. These two, a man and a woman, would prance around that tree until the paper dried up and blew away, and that longevity, that uniqueness made Colossus all the happier.
