When Soph squeezed his hand, David smiled. She hadn't lingered, and she hadn't softly brushed his skin like so many did - in attempts to be gentle. He understood why, but they usually didn't understand him. At least she hadn't minded his intrusion. Apparently touching people without permission was 'creepy', according to Ronan. But David's hands had minds of their own, creepy or not. Plus, he was nicknamed The Pumpkin King (among other things)... he was bound to be creepy sometimes.
"Oh, good!" He was brought out of his reverie by Sophronia's mention of Eva and her confirmation. "I love them here. I thought for sure the first one," years and years ago, "was to make me feel more welcomed." Which, it might've been. But now he just liked to participate and be in his element. Now to answer her question: "I've been told," he raised his eyebrows conspiratorially, "that I will be dressed as David S. Pumpkins." Auster smirked and shook his head. He rarely cared what he was dressed as, as long as he was in costume and having fun. And it seemed to make Conlan and Morgan happy beyond reason. Last year, it had been too late to change their costumes, but they'd had a whole year to prepare now.
"Ronan's little brothers want to be my skeletons." He laughed, then hid his amusement behind his cup as he drank. "What are you planning? Something girly?" he teased. 'Something girly' here meaning 'lingerie with animal ears'. "I recall you had some Halloween scrubs last year... I bet the students appreciated that. You and the other medical staff thankfully like to keep things upbeat." Hospitals weren't solely morgues, after all. He squinted one eye at how gruesome his thought train had become, then he spied they'd neared the water and his face relaxed with relief.
"I didn't realize how far we'd come..." The tall man told his walking company. "Do you fancy having a seat for a bit?"
