She didn't mean to duck out on him while he was still unpacking his things, but she needed to get out of the house. She had a lot on her mind these last few days and she thought going for a walk would help clear her head. Everything was moving so fast. Her whirlwind rise to the top of the pops. Going from Alison Blaire...who? To Alison Blaire Dazzler, seemingly overnight; the fame, the fortune, that alone was enough to drive her neurotic at times.
Now, here she was, making commitments in leaps and bounds. Her boyfriend was moving in! As in, today! They were really doing this. It was exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time. It was a big deal for both of them, considering Arthur was moving in, to be with her, all the way from L.A.
All of these things seemed minute in retrospect to what was weighing so heavily on her mind these last few days. Alison felt...funny. Definitely good-funny, but weird inside nonetheless. It was a happiness that swelled up inside of her, a feeling of completeness. Something, that she couldn't describe, filled her belly. She couldn't explain it, but she did seem a little bit rounder lately.
After about twenty minutes she had returned to the brownstone. "Hi baby," she said absently, pecking him quickly on the cheek and disappearing upstairs. It was obvious that she was distracted by something, she didn't even comment on his mess. She locked herself in the upstairs bathroom and pulled out the pregnancy test from within her purse. She unfolded the instructions - how complicated could this be?
She had been gone for nearly another ten, when she reappeared on the landing looking over the living room below. "What time is it?" she called down. No sooner at she been told the time, she reappeared five minutes later to ask the same question. "What time is it now?" Again, to the bathroom, only to reemerge shortly after. "Have you seen my phone?" Practically running down the stairs, she closed the distance to where he was sitting and frantically searched the couch. She over turned the cushions and pulled of the pillows.
"Have you seen my phone?" she almost accused. "How can you find anything in this mess?" Alison scowled, running up the stairs once more to return to the bathroom. How long did this thing take? Rapid response her foot, she glanced at the test which still hadn't yielded an answer. How frustrating. And where was her phone? Alison over turned her purse, spilling it contents into the sink, her phone falling out with a bit of a clatter amongst pens and lip gloss and other assorted brick and brack. She checked the clock. How long had it been now? Alison clenched her jaw. Only a few minutes had elapsed since she last asked Arthur the time.
She paced, quick strides, back and forth, her stomps echoing through the floor. Alison glared at the pregnancy test, willing for it do something. Sure enough, a little pink triangle slowly faded into existence. Her mouth fell slack. Alison stayed like that, for a long time, just staring at the test, a million and one thoughts racing through her mind, but most importantly: how was she going to tell Arthur?
Pocketing the test, Alison simpered downstairs, moving behind the couch, looming off in the background.
