WHO: Dane Whitman
NPCs: Beast of Exmoor & a Troll
WHAT: Dane travels to Exmoor on an assignment from Alistaire, there he encounters not only the Beast of Exmoor (surprise! It’s real!) and a troll.
WHERE: Exmoor
WHEN: Friday, October 22nd, 2010
RATING: PG
When Alistaire had first dumped the docs on his desk, Dane had dutifully started to go through the paperwork. A quick goolge search had shown him that the “Beast” didn’t seem to be supernatural in origin, and that there was where very plausible explanations for the sittings that had occurred. Bringing his finding to the Alistaire, he had been told disdainfully that “not everything you google is true. You think you’d know that by now.”
After that Dane had gathered up his gear, and journeyed to Exmoor National Park.
Now Dane had seen enough horror movies (hell he often felt like he was living in a horror movie) to know the rules. And despite knowing the horror movie rules, here he was breaking one of the cardinal ones. He was going out on the moors. Alone. And at night. He was a horror movie cliche waiting to happen.
As soon as that thought had crossed his mind Dane heard a rustling in the woods behind him. His hand moved into his jacket pocket, and he grabbed a hold of the hilt of the sword that he carried there. There was certainly advantages to having traded in the Ebony Blade for this one. It was just a hilt most of the time, but then it could become so much more . . .
Hand gripped around the sword hilt and the laser leaped from the blade, he turned slowly and froze when he saw what was emerging from the woods. It was a cat. It was a huge cat. Black in colour and really, really big in size.
“Oh shit. Alistaire was right.” Not everything that you googled was true. At all. Or rather in this case what some of the people in the fringe proposed was true -- there was a massive black cat in these here woods. The cat stalked towards him, and Dane took a firmer grip on his sword, wishing for a moment he still had the Ebony Blade with him. Magic vs magic (because Dane wasn’t sure how a cat this big could exist without some sort of supernatural goings on) instead of magic vs technology.
The cat sprang forward and Dane spun, trying to keep it in his sight. Turning accomplished that all right, and also showed him that it wasn’t just the cat and himself in the woods -- there was also a troll. A stealthy troll obviously (who knew?) because it had managed to make its way through the woods without alerting Dane that it was there.
“All right, so magic times two vs. technology ...”
The troll took a swing at Dane, Dane ducked and came up swinging himself, and found that the scuffle had been joined by the giant black cat. And that the cat and he seemed to be on the same side, so it was more magic and technology vs magic. The fight was a bit one sided after that, the troll was big, but not a match for Dane and the Beast of Exmoor.
Afterwards (when Dane was trying to make a pile of troll parts, for easier “Taking care of” by the people who handled the clean up) he realized the cat had vanished. Dane wasn’t too keen to go track it down. He’d tell Alistaire that there had been a troll, it had been taken care of. And he’d mention the cat, but ... say it had eluded tracking. Hey, it had helped Dane out, and he had seen what it had done to the troll. Dane wanted to stay on that cat’s good side.
