It would be better this time, he had sworn to himself. Not like the last time. No. Unlike that fateful day, he was going into this interview knowing all the answers, about himself, who he was, and most importantly, who he needed to be now. After his escape from Mojo over a year ago, he had rushed too fast back into his old life and been broken by what he found there but now, after taking the time to heal emotionally, he felt about as good as he imagined he ever would. Certainly there were many things that he still wanted, but he felt as content now as he possibly could given his circumstances, and wanted to thus make every effort to rebuild his life starting now.
Which happened to be sitting across from acclaimed late night talk show host Jay Leno, as the show came back live from a commercial break. Sitting up straighter in his worn leather jacket and blue jeans, he smiled and gave a way to the audience that had been variously hooting and clapping since he had walked on stage moments ago. As the cameras focused on Jay, the host leaned forward in the chair he sat in across from Arthur with his elbows on his knees and his hands clasped together.
"Welcome back, we're talking to Arthur Centino, and let me say it's great to have you back. After another whole year away, though, I can't help but ask the one question that everyone wants to know: where have you been?"
Arthur nodded, and smiled smugly. This was expected, of course. After his debacle on Oprah and subsequent disappearance, he had known this question would be first.
"I have to be honest with you Jay, I stepped back into the lime light too fast a year ago. I was emotionally scarred, and I did not give myself the proper time to heal. As you know, well... things went to Hell."
"We don't have to dwell on that Arthur, but one thing you never quite answered last year was... well, what actually happened to you in the first place?"
For just a moment, Arthur glanced down. He was prepared for this, too. But that did not make it any easier to talk about.
"I was taken against my will by men who wanted to use my skills for their profits. I was tortured every day, in ways both physical and mental. When I finally escaped, I..."
It was impossible not to think of Alison and Pete.
"I found things were different than when I had left. And I couldn't handle it. I needed to be alone to figure things out, and so for the past year I have been traveling the world doing just that. And respectively, I'd like to leave it at that for now."
In a rare moment, Jay actually nodded in some sort of somber understanding.
"Alright, well... moving on then, are you back for good now? And if so, what are your immediate plans?"
"I have no intention of disappearing again", Arthur said coolly, as he sat up straighter in his chair. "And as far as my immediate plans, I have a film that is going to be released in the next few weeks. Along with my side travels, its been a project I have been working on for some time now."
"A step back into the lime light and the announcement of your first movie in over two years in one night, huh? What can we expect to see in it?"
"I suppose you could think of this film as a cross between Mortal Kombat and Cast Away. I play a man who has everything. A woman he loves more than any other, a child on the way, and a fabulous career. But it's all taken from him as he is forced into modern day gladiatorial combat. And without ruining too much, let me just say that his life does not get any better once he finally escapes."
"This... I'm sorry, but this would not at all be inspired in any way from what happened to you.. would it?", Jay dared to ask, clearly unsure as to whether or not Arthur would answer.
But there was no hesitation.
"Let's just say that the film is the closest anyone will ever come to understanding the trials I have been through."
"But if these events were so terrible, why would you want to relive them?"
Arthur smiled, but there was no joy or light to his expression.
"It was the only way I knew to exorcise my demons."
"Well... that's about all the time we have now. Thank you very much, Arthur", Jay said, reaching across to shake his hand as the segment closed.
As Arthur got up, he gave a slight wave to the cameras. "Any time, Jay. Anytime."
