She had come to Quebec for the long weekend -- the Quebec long weekend for Journée nationale des patriote. Elsewhere in Canada it was Victoria Day, but here in Quebec it was Journée nationale des patriote. The result was the same however, a long weekend at the end of May, that gave the people of Montreal (and the province of Quebec) the day off.
So Jeanne-Marie was one of the few who were on the campus of McGill University that afternoon. The majority of the students there for the summer session, as well as the professors and other staff, had taken the day off. She had just been wandering around the city when her feet had taken her here, and now she wandered around the campus. She tried to imagine "what if". She had once been very good at that -- as a child she had often wondered what if her parents hadn't died -- what would she be like. It had a little harder as she got older, and became if not happy with her life, at least satisfied.
No, in retrospect she had not enjoyed her time with Alpha Flight all that much. But the real reason she was so angry with them was that they had become a kind of family to her. And than, just like her parents they had gone away. And she still had Jean-Paul yes, but she flet like she was loosing him too.
So she wandered the campus, and tired to imagine herself as a student there. She couldn't. Maybe a Jeanne-Marie would have been happy here once upon a time, or happy at any school, but not now. Frustrated, she decided to head back down to the core of downtown Montreal. There would be more people there, a crowd even, and she could loose herself in that, and not think about what if.
