PHONE CALL: Dani to Black Eagle
To: Black Eagle
From: Dani Moonstar
Date: 02/15/10 -- evening (you know, after they get back from mostly not actually helping stop Galactus and whatnot)
Despite a few scrapes and bruises, Dani was mostly no worse for the wear as she trudged back into the temporary accommodations Charles had set up for her. She knew she desperately needed a shower and to change but, right then, she just wanted to collapse into a heap. Well, that or have a stiff drink.
She didn't do any of those things, however. Instead, Dani pulled out her cell and pressed speed dial #2. There were four rings before the phone was picked up with loud clang. "Hello?" Black Eagle's voice sounded rough as though he'd just awoke.
Dani felt a pang of guilt. She hadn't meant to interrupt his rest... she just hadn't expected him to be resting while the world was quite possibly ending. "[Did I wake you?]" she asked, bypassing the usual pleasantries. "[I apologize. I did not think you would be sleeping. I can call back if you want...]"
"[No, no.]" Black Eagle's voice was full of determination and he cleared his throat. That's when Dani knew there was something coming. "[Do not worry,] Peggy." The name made her blanch and sent shivers down her spine. "[It is so good to hear your voice! You never call me anymore. Is that any way to treat your father?]"
It took quite the effort on her part but Dani somehow managed to swallow the unpleasant feelings eating her up inside. "[What? No, grandfather, it is me--] Danielle."
"Danielle?" For the longest moment of her life, she was afraid he wouldn't know her at all. "[You sound just like your mother. Where is she? Are you not young to be making long distance calls by yourself?]"
"[No, grandfather, I--]" Dani swallowed, feeling tears prickling the corners of her eyes. "[I do not live with my mother any longer.]" You should know that, she didn't add. Just like he should know her parents were dead and she was already grown.
Black Eagle clucked his tongue. "[That is no good. You should not be off on your own. Who will take care of you?]"
Her hands shook as Dani tried not to cry. "[No one, I--]" She shook her head as tears began to fall. "[Do you not--?]" But she couldn't finish. She couldn't ask the question because she didn't want to know the answer. "[I just called to tell you that I am all right,]" she told him finally. "[I-- I will speak with you on Sunday, as always.]"
"[Of course, Little One,]" Black Eagle said, voice full of understanding and concern. "[Is everything all right?]"
No, things were not all right but Dani didn't say that. She just couldn't. Because saying would be admitting and admitting would mean that there really was something wrong and then-- well, she didn't want to think about that. She couldn't think about that. Not after they'd just faced down an alien trying to eat their world for lunch.
Because how could she stand there, protecting her world only to have it collapse from under her, anyway? It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair that they'd saved everything but things still weren't right! How was Dani supposed to reconcile that? How was she supposed to make it okay? (Could she even do that at all? She didn't want to admit it, but she didn't think so...)
So, Dani only said: "[I love you,]" to Black Eagle before hanging up the phone. It was the only true thing she could think to say to him in that moment. Then she pulled a pillow from the bed, hugging it to her face in an attempt to smother her cries. Because the world was saved but things still weren't right and she just didn't know what to do...
