The Matrix has Tessa!
Who: Sage
NPCs: —
When: Sunday 24 January 2009
Where: Tessa's apartment, New York City
What: A typical weekend for Tessa.
Rating: G
It was a beautiful sunset over the water. The pollution of New York made the colors vibrant, streaming through purple clouds and reflecting off majestic glass skyscrapers. Down below, snow collected on the private dock that Tessa swore would someday hold her own sailboat. It was for that dock and that view that Tessa had been willing to pay such exorbitant prices for this apartment. And indeed, the view of the sunset from her large bay window was extraordinary.
Or would have been, if she could see it.
Heavy drapes blocked the window. The light cast too much glare on her computer screens. A bank of monitors wallpapered the room, flashing images and text that were reflected on her face. Singaporean stock market prices, an instruction manual on piloting a hydrofoil, a map showing cell phone usage in Johannesburg, a site on iPod viruses, she seemed to take it all in without effort. She had two keyboards set up, one hand on each, typing different things at a machine gun's pace. The latest in head-tracking technology let her direct the input to whichever screen she wished with the slightest tilt of her head. In the background, a bizarre soundtrack played spoken words sped up almost past the point of disambiguation. She'd decided to finish learning all of the Chinese languages and the slowest part was learning how it sounded. Her eyes could take in information much faster than her ears, but even so, she was learning to work around her human frailties. Speeding up the lessons may sound like demonic Hakka chipmonks, but it was a trivial matter to mentally translate the noises into their intended sound.
She was comfortable. It was shocking how comfortable she was, in this world of ones and zeroes. Logic reigned supreme, and anything could be yours if you were clever enough. And she was indeed so very very clever. It was as if she had been asleep all of her life, but now, now she finally understood what her mutation meant.
She was the Übermensch. She was limitless. She was Sage.
