Alison hated industry parties. She took that back, she hated industry parties with people who knew nothing about music. The other kind, the one that generally included the creative minds behind the scenes, were actually quite fun. No, Alison was referring to the boring kind. The one where the people were dull and the whole event was a guaranteed, sycophantic snooze-fest. In LA, everyone just wanted to sit around congratulating themselves for being so rich and famous. At least they served booze, there was no way, Alison would have to sit and entertain the company of the Forbes 400 sober. These generally included people like Milton Ager, Aaron Copland, and Morton Gould. Who knew they gave a Pulitzer Prize for Music and who knew that Jewish composers made up 20% of all award recipients? Alison did.
Generally, Alison would have been interested in meeting and greeting everyone. But after a while, it was just the same thing over and over and over again...c'est la vie, non? Alison just figured that this was all something that went along with celebrity-dom.
The English version of the socialite party was proving to be no different, more stuffy if anything. She had been lost in a delusion about stabbing her own eyes with mini-cocktail forks, having been sucked into a conversation with someone who reminded her Rich Uncle Pennybags. Half way through her third Monopoly joke she was approached by an younger-looking blond, who let Alison know about an after-party that was happening that night.
Flipping the flying over on its axis, she looked at the address again. No venue name, she thought to herself, that was promising. No venue name meant that the party was being held at someone's house or private studio, generally meant someone who didn't want to deal with the liquor laws or being shut down. The party's actually location was a warehouse in London's south side. The mess of cars and minis parked outside told Alison that this was the place. She could hear the beats emanating from the building, she couldn't tell where exactly, the owner of the warehouse had enough foresight to blacken out the windows. Good sign, number two. She knew she wasn't going to find a single glow-stick wielding, freakazoid inside.
Approaching the door, she flashed the flier to the hired muscle. Being Dazzler alone was not enough to get her through the door. This was getting better and better. This was like the old days, when she would sneak out her bedroom window to rave on the weekend. She could slip in and out if she wanted to and no one would have been the wiser that Alison Blaire was there, partying there, like everyone else. The hooligan-looking bouncer stepped aside and aloud her entrance to the building. From there, she followed her ears around the corner, down the stairs, down the hall, and into a large room.
The bass pulsed, thrumming through her and into her ribcage as if it were her own heartbeat. Lights flashed in chaotic rhythm, teasing Alison's eyes. She flipped over the flyer again. The blond had signed her name and left a phone number. There was no way she was going to hear her phone over this much sound, but that was okay. This wasn't her first time at the proverbial rodeo. While everyone seemed to be congregated in front of the elevated DJ booth, Alison B-lined it toward the second largest gathering, the liquor line.
