Jean was sitting in bed, reading a book, when Scott finally came to bed for the evening. They had long since become used to this as part of their daily routine—running the school kept at least one of them running late to bed every day, and the only way to avoid it was to pull strings and asks favors from their friends in the teaching staff (a system they tried not to abuse). Still, they'd gotten into a rhythm long ago of staying up to wait for the other as long as possible.
She finished the paragraph that she was reading, placing her bookmark between the pages and setting it onto her end table next to the baby monitor that fed them sounds from Rachel's nursery. With her telekinesis, she pulled back to covers on Scott's side of the bed, watching him as he changed into his pajama pants and his sleep mask. He sat down on the edge of the bed with a sigh, and she scooted forward, gently massaging his shoulders. He let out a deeper noise at her touch. "You need to get some rest, Scott."
He grunted lightly in agreement, finally making his way under the covers. He reached his hand out to touch her neck, pressing a kiss to her lips. "Rachel give you any trouble at bedtime?"
"No. I think she's over the worst of her stubbornness about getting to sleep." Jean turned back to the end table, switching off her light before curling up with her shoulder against Scott's chest, closing her eyes to the sound of him breathing. They lay in silence for a long moment before Scott's rumbling voice broke the silence.
"Listen, I know some of the things I wanted to get you for Valentine's Day, but if there's anything you want especially...you've been so good with the girls, and I haven't always been able to give you the time I--" She brought a hand to his lips in the dark.
"Scott, shush. You're a good man and a good father and good husband. You've given me a good life, and anything on top of that is a bonus." She placed her hand on his cheek, leaning in to kiss her. "You've given me everything I could ask for."
In the moonlight, she could see his boyish smile. "But you won't say no to chocolate?"
She gave him a smile in return. "But I won't say no to chocolate."
"I love you, Jean."
"I love you too, Scott."
