"Good," Jean answered, giving Laura one big squeeze. "We also need to start talking about plans for after high school. You're getting to the age where you have to start making some big decisions for the future. I know it's not always fun to think about and talk about, but your father and I want to make sure you're set. And...well, we want you to start thinking about what you want."
She looked Laura in the eye, making sure she had the girl's attention as she spoke. "You're always putting what other people want ahead of what you might want. And it's always sweet and thoughtful when you do, but you're just about the age where it's time for you to decide who you want to be. And all I've ever wanted was to give you the chance to do just that. To not have anybody else dictating what purpose your life should serve."
