“Mr. Whitman do you have a minute?”
The thing about his housekeeper was that she reminded him of his grandmother. It wasn’t that they looked alike, it was just something in her bearing and her tone that reminded him of Grandma Whitman. So whenever she asked if he had a moment, he always felt as if he was going to be asked who had broken the good china plate, or who had put a dent in Grandpa Whitman’s car.
“Of course.” Dane turned around and gave his housekeeper a smile. She had her coat on, and had been heading for the door. She and Dane had already exchanged their good nights, and had wished each other a good weekend. He really wasn’t sure what she might be about to ask.
“I’d like to bring in some extra help in a week or so. Just a couple extra people, get some extra hands to give the place a good clean.”
Dane gave an absentminded nod, said of course and then; “Great. Just - not the library all right?” And upon a second moment of reflection. “And not the east hall on the third floor.” He was pretty sure that the secret passageway in that hall was secret and would only show its self to those who belonged to the family.
If the housekeeper thought that the request was odd, she didn’t say so. She nodded her head, and turned to go and then turned back.
“I’ll let you know what dates the extra help will be here. Just in case you had any visitors who would be staying over.”
Dane didn’t turn red, just looked down at the ground and muttered a; “Of course.” It had happened once and he hadn't had any visitors to the castle since.
“And one more thing Mr. Whitman?” Dane looked up. “I grew up not far from here, there’s always been … stories about this place being haunted, being a bit odd.”
“Well - I think that any place that’s around long enough probably has stories that get attached to it.”
“Hmm. True enough. Well...” The housekeeper glanced around. “Sometimes a person thinks they see things. Out of the corner of their eye … odd things. And just it would be nice if such things might not happen when the extra help is here. So no more tales get told.”
Dane looked at his housekeeper, she looked at him. Again he was struck by how much she reminded him of his grandmother. And he he could never pull anything over on his grandmother. So he gave a nod of his head, and a made a mental note to ask Sir Percy to be scarce when the extra cleaning help was here.
