Not expecting company in the slightest, Maria was startled into dropping her feet from atop the desk as she heard footsteps behind her; she just managed to get her legs properly under her and not stretched out towards buttons that would bring about a state of world emergency when Agent Carter entered.
She wasn't entirely ashamed to admit - to herself - that she was morose and gloomy, which made her grumpy more than anything. "People forget this is my life," she called back to Carter. Watching the state of the world on New Year's Eve and waiting for trouble; yeah, hell of a life.
She gave a shrug as Carter came back, with clipboard and paperwork and inevitable coffee. "No skin off mine if you want to do paperwork here," she said. "Just don't push the red buttons," she added dryly, the SHIELD form of a joke.
She supposed being delighted in the ringing phone did say a great deal about her night. The caller information popped up on one of the smaller screens; ID photo, SHIELD classification, stacked windows with notable mentions in reports. Answering, she said, "This is Hill. What can I do for you, Coulson?" See? She wasn't the only crazy SHIELD agent who didn't take vacations - she had Coulson and Carter working with her, too.
