"See anything?"
"Not yet", Bucky said from his concealed perch as he peered through the scope of his M1903 sniper rifle. Situated atop of a hill, he and his spotter, Private David Wood-who was six years older than him-had been tasked with scouting the lay of the land while the Missouri Marauders pounded ground in the forest below them. It was not a situation that Bucky particular cared for, as he would have rather worked alongside the Howlers and especially Cap, but orders were orders and he had been assigned to assist the Marauders in their trek across Nazi occupied France on their way to meet up with members of the French Resistance. Which still did not make this the most exciting of missions for him, though he did enjoy relating some of the adventures he had had thus far in the war alongside Cap to the rest of the unit during their down time. Which was to say nothing of how the older men hung on his every word.
"Ready to move on then?", Wood asked impatiently, as he looked through his binoculars at the same stretch of land they had both been covering for the past half hour.
"Sergeant Jenkins should be breaking the treeline below us anytime", Bucky responded without looking away from his scope. "Just another minute or..." Bucky trailed off as on the far side of the clearing, a pair of small children burst into view. One of them, a girl, stumbled and the boy hurriedly spun around to help her up, even as two larger forms emerged. Members of the Schutzstaffel. And judging by the scenario before him, Bucky felt his heart sink as he realized the children were likely Jewish.
"Christ", Wood exclaimed as he lowered his binoculars to look at Bucky, who was taking aim. "You'll never make it from here, kid. That's gotta be over two thousand meters from here. Just.. fuck. Jenkins should be right about there and-"
"Quiet", Bucky said as he slowed his breathing. "I can't wait. Not another second", he said, even as he watched the two S.S. men point their automatic weapons at the children who were raising their arms as if they would function as a shield. To him, the world seemed to slow as he aimed at the first of the men, breathing gently as he delicately applied a few pounds of pressure to the delicate trigger of his weapon. The sudden crack of the weapon as it fired froze the Nazi's and the children in place as surprise overtook them all, and as Bucky automatically loaded another round, he heard Wood next to him confirming his first kill.
"Jesus, you nearly blew his head off!"
Bucky did not bother to even look, and only saw the outline of his first victim as the man fell. The second of the S.S. men looked around fearfully for less than a second before Bucky's bullet caught him squarely in the chest, so that within the span of a few heart beats the threat had passed, even if the children were still huddled together in the tall grass.
"I ain't never seen shooting like that", Wood said as Bucky finally lowered his rifle and leaned back against a tree. Below them, in the plain, the Marauders finally emerged in a sprint, only to find the two dead bodies near the children who they quickly moved toward to provide comfort.
"You think that was good?", Bucky asked, letting no small measure of cockiness seep into his voice as he looked across at Wood. "You should see what I can do with a knife."
