Rating: PG
It had been a long day. Sure it had been eventful and nice and even fun, but it had been excruciatingly long. Getting ready, getting the bride ready, making sure this or that was in order, the reception. Sure the dancing was fun and the booze and food was awesome, but there were certain things that got talked about at weddings. That was weddings, future, potential weddings.
Which Lorna didn’t really think was anyone else’s business. However, the way Alex was responding to it? She tried to remember how he was, but sometimes his Alex like responses to things just pissed her off. That slight look of terror. Well, to hell with him too then. And they’d been having such a fantastic time.
So she was a bit tired, and she’d maybe had a tad too much champagne, and she’d continued to have fun, but by the end of the night was in a pissy mood. The party was still going on for quite a few stragglers but the bride and groom were long gone, and Lorna figured she should leave before there was a scene. So she informed him she was going to get a ride back to the hotel with another wedding guest that was staying there. Passive aggressive, but she really couldn’t be in an enclosed car with him.
When she got in, she got into a scalding hot shower.
Alex knew he had done something. He wasn’t 100% on what he had done - probably because he had had a little too much champagne. Every time someone made a comment he’d had a drink - and there had been a fair amount of comments. That was a subject that Alex wasn’t supper keen on discussing, and not at his brothers wedding. He just wanted to enjoy the party! Enjoy the fact that Scott and Jean were married (finally). He had no intention of being like Scott. He just - didn’t want to talk about weddings in relation to himself.
When Lorna had told him she was going back to the hotel, he had almost said he would go with her. But self preservation had kicked in, he had said; “sure” and lingered behind, loitering around for a while before finding his own ride back to the hotel.
Back at their room, he heard the shower running. He kicked off his shoes, and took off his suit jacket, and took a seat on the bed. He turned on the TV, scowling as he realized the TV was tuned to some station that was playing Father Of The Bride -- the universe was not giving him a break. He began a search for the remote.
When Lorna got out of the bathroom (dressed in pjs) she hadn’t expected to see Alex already back and searching the room for something. She frowned slightly at his back before pulling the towel out of her wet hair and tossing it back in the bathroom. She shuffled over to her bag and wordlessly pulled out a comb and began to comb through her hair. Her hot shower hadn’t done enough to cool her off. In fact under the spray she had just spent the time thinking
Alex got that she was mad - he did pick that vibe up. He figured that he had a couple of options here, ask her what was wrong, ignore her back, or act like everything was normal. Being Alex the first option wasn't really an option, although he did consider asking for a moment.
Then since he was Alex he went for the option of acting like nothing was wrong.
He looked at the TV screen and Steve Martin doing his freaked out father of the bride thing and then at Lorna; "Have you seen the remote?"
When Alex spoke to her she couldn’t help it when she just twirled around and blinked at him in shock. Seriously? Did he really just ask her that? “No.” She answered sharply as opposed to turning back around and ignoring him again, but like always once she said something she couldn’t really stop. “Is that seriously the only thing you have to say to me right now?”
Alex gave her a blank look for a second. Then all cautious like he ventured a; “No?” He really could be thick sometimes - but he thought that if Lorna was mad at all the talking and comments about other weddings that she’d be annoyed with the people who had made those comments like he was. He walked over to the TV and turned it off via the button on the machine.
No Steve Martin highjinks for them tonight.
“What’s wrong?” Yes, he had to ask.
Lorna blinked again. He honestly didn’t know. Granted she should just make assumptions on these things, but didn’t he know her enough by now? She rubbed her temple. “You know I don’t want to get married yet.” She blurted out suddenly even though he’d just asked. “Really, there’s things I still want to do, but screw you.”
She shook her head tossing the comb back in her suitcase. “We’ve been together for two years, and we were dancing around each other for at least more than a year before that.” She counted off starting to get angrier. If she didn’t she just might start crying because really he’d hurt her feelings. “I’m smart, and I think I have a pretty good sense of humor. And I am damned marriageable, mister. So I really think I deserve more than that “oh shit” horrified look on your face when someone so much as mentions the remote possibility.” He could be annoyed and peeved at the meddling, but sometimes his very “Alex” reactions to things just made her angry.
Alex stood there, not quite understanding at first what was going on, because when she said she didn’t want to get married he had started to relax. Okay so she was mad about something but it wasn’t about that - except as she kept talking he realized that it was about that.
“Lorna -- I.” He felt that he might be wearing that horrified oh shit look on his face right now. Because he just didn’t want to have this fight. Ever. But very much not right now. “I’m sorry.” He offered that up, although he probably could have sounded a little more sincere.
“You are very marriageable. But like you - I am not ready.”
Because marriage - marriage meat a family to Alex, and he didn’t want a family when he had to go off and do X-men things.
That was it? Half-assed apology and an instant agreement of her point? Well, like most arguments with Alex, Lorna was now regretting starting this. He was being thick like normal, and at the moment she kind of didn’t want to see his face. So she threw up her hands rather dramatically. “Fine.” She said, willing her eyes not to water. (Damn champagne). “Whatever.” She turned down the covers on her side of the bed and climbed in. She rolled over to face the wall, pulling the blankets up to her chin and sniffed. “Good Night.” Weddings suck.
Alex was feeling like he had dodged a bullet - he didn’t like the idea of going to sleep with them still in a fight (and he knew they were still in a fight). He also didn’t like the fact that he had upset Lorna, but she was saying good night, and Alex wasn’t going to keep this going. Tomorrow. They could talk about things tomorrow.
He got up and puttered around for the room for a bit, changing into sleepwear and then silently getting into bed. It was going to be a long night.
So Alex had gotten up early - there hadn’t been a whole lot of sleeping for Alex the night before. He had donned sunglasses (stupid morning after lots of champagne) and then headed out for coffee. He had gotten some doughnuts as well (nothing said peace offering like pastry, right?) and then headed back to the room. “Hey …?” He called out cautiously as he entered the room.
Lorna woke up in the morning when she felt and heard Alex moving around the room. He left and she attempted to go back to sleep, but he wasn’t gone for too terribly long. Instead of answering right away when she heard his cautious tone so pulled the covers up over her head to ignore him. Until she figured she was being silly and immature. “Morning.” She answered. However, she didn’t move from under the blankets.
Eyeing the pile of blankets on the bed that covered his girlfriend, Alex carefully placed the coffee down in front of the tv, and went over to sit on the edge of the bed. He sat there for a moment before saying; “I brought coffee. And doughnuts.” Yes - he was going to ease into this conversation!
Lorna turned over and poked her face out of the covers. “Glazed or cream filled?” Yes, because that was important right now. Geez, she wasn’t even all that hungry. She pushed herself up to a sitting position with her knees at her chest. She looked at the blank TV in front of the bed. “I sorry that I just expected you to know what I was upset.” She said. There an apology. Or course she couldn’t help the next part from coming out either. “But you hurt my feelings. Weddings suck.”
“Both. Although they all got put in the same bag, and I got some that were covered in sugar, so some of the sugar transferred over.” Alex was busy looking at the doughnuts, and making a point of not looking over at Lorna. He was giving her “space” - or you know as much space as he could considering they were both sitting on the same bed.
He frowned when she said that he had hurt her feelings - because he never wanted to do that. He gave up the study of the doughnuts and looked over at Lorna. “I am sorry.” This sounded more sincere then last nights apology. “And you know that I think your very marrigable. And it’s not you, it’s the whole … wedding thing. And what would come after that. That’s scary.”
Really. She was marrigable. he wouldn’t bring just anyone coffee and doughnuts.
She gave him a small smile at his apology. “I know.” She shook her head. “People think they’re allowed to be in everyone’s business.” She pushed some hair behind her ears. “I just.... I love you. And it’s good to be on the same page with things is all.” And man that look last night had just made her tired, annoyed mood so much worse.
“I promise that next time someone tries to be in our business, that any look on my face is about them. Not you. Because I love you too. And in interest of being on the same page - you don’t want to be engaged forever, right?” He didn’t know if dating for two years with no end of the ‘dating’ stage in sight was worse or better then being engaged for a long time. For Alex it was just a given that engagement and marriage came post X-team. Whenever that was.
She looked at him confused for a second. “I don’t care.” She said with a shrug, and she found that she really didn’t. “I mean right now I really don’t. I just... I just suddenly needed to know what was going on.” Oh dear God, she was not fishing to be asked. “Things are good right now, so I don’t care how long things are at what stage.”
“Well what’s going on is that I love you.” Even when he didn’t quite understand her. He figured that she probably didn’t understand him either sometimes. “And -- I think things are good right now.” So that was good - they were both on the same page there.
He leaned over to give her a kiss.
She really didn’t. Sometimes she really didn’t get his broody, internalize things until he explodes nature. Sill she agreed and she nodded. “It is.” And she really hadn’t meant to ever imply they weren’t or anything. So she kissed him back. “Doughnuts then?”
