"Ten years ago when I came to you about this, you told me it was too dangerous. That it would never work. And that it would be criminal to test it on a human being and now-"
Tony looked up from his work desk that was immaculate in direct contrast to his garage back in Malibu. Across the surface he had what appeared at first glance to be parts of one of his armors, with the usual red gauntlets, chest piece, and other familiar plates. Upon further inspection a keen observer would however note that each piece of this armor was sleeker, and at least at the moment, bendable. On each side of him, projections of holographic images showed two very distinct suits of armor. In the image to Tony's left, he had the blue prints to the armor he was currently working on. Opposite to that, he had the design lay out for another armor that was smaller, and radically different in terms of design and capability. The only thing that tied each armor to the other, aside from the arc reactors, was the basic red and gold color scheme.
To the speaker he had turned to and interrupted, a beautiful brunette who stood in a lab coat several feet from him, he shrugged. "I know, Maya. I know. But that was ten years ago. Now you have myself, and all of my resources to help you finish this. And besides... since I'm dying anyway, I'm not too worried about it killing me a little sooner if something goes wrong."
Maya narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms. "I still don't like it. I've always told you that you'll die young, but I don't need you doing it on my watch."
Leaning back in his swivel chair, Tony set down the gauntlet he had been tinkering with and smirked. Generally, it was the kind of look that got under the skin of women and drove them to varying points of irritation. But now, given his sickly pallor, the expression almost looked macabre. "It'll work, Maya. It has to. So just... trust me, alright?"
"The last time you told me to 'just trust you', Tony Stark, we wound up naked and locked outside of my dorm room in the middle of the afternoon", Maya said flatly, as she took a step toward him.
"Well, thank God for that room mate of yours who still hung her clothes out to dry."
Maya shook her head and smiled, despite herself, as she swatted his shoulder. "You know, I never will forget how you looked in that dress."
"That's just because I looked better in it than Heather."
"Heather? How do you remember her name...?"
Tony looked up at Maya innocently and was about to voice an excuse, when JARVIS broke in.
"Excuse my intrusion, Mr. Stark, but there is a situation at Stark Industries Headquarters. It appears the facility is under attack."
"Thank God", Tony said quickly as he glanced at Maya, getting up out of his chair a little too fast, so that she had to help steady him. After a moment of consideration, in which he tried to see straight, he added, "Alright, well... have the Avengers see to it. I've got work here."
"An excellent idea, sir. I will have the team there in one hour."
"An hour!? That's too long." Pushing away from Maya, he started toward the far wall where an assembly unit was already prepping his Mark IV armor. "JARVIS, who are we dealing with? HYDRA? AIM?"
"An individual, sir. He is calling himself the Stilt-Man."
Tony rolled his eyes. "Wilbur Day? Hell Maya, run the rest of my alterations for the Extremis enhancile. I'll be back in twenty minutes."
Maya moved to stop Tony, but he was already within the mechanized process of suiting up as pieces of the armor were attached to his body. Muttering something beneath her breath, she stormed back to where he was working and turned toward him sharply, just as his helmet snapped into place. "Tony... this.. there are two sets of alterations here. How in the hell did you compute two sets of code that fast, and what is the purpose of the second?"
"I'm not just doing this for me, Maya", Tony said as he began checking power levels.
For a moment Maya looked as though she was going to demand more out of him, but finally just sat down in his chair and went to work in frustration.
"Sir, your work on the Metallo-mimetic MK III has been saved, but the other project needs a file name."
"Label it Mark 1616."
"That number does not coincide numerically with any other Iron Man armor. Are you sure that is what you want?"
"Yes, JARVIS", Tony said as he ignited his thrusters and lifted off the ground. "It's not for me either."
Maya perked up and looked at him suspiciously but shrugged it off as he fly toward an opening in the ceiling.
