"Mr. Stark," Atha Williams's voice came through the intercom and Howard glanced at it, "What?" "Mr. Hammer called again. He really wishes to speak with you," Atha said in a voice that was as professional as they could get. Stark replied, "Tell him I'm busy and will be. I'll call him back when I can but I have a full schedule." There was a moment's hesitation before Atha replied, "Of course, Mr. Stark." The intercom cut off and Howard was alone in his office again. He turned on the computer again since the discovery almost a month earlier but Howard was more careful now. Someone was watching him and it unsettled him. Not necessarily that someone watched him, as he was a public figure and a weapons manufacturer, but that they got in his system without him realizing it. He was used to this sort of bullshit attempted by Fury, but this wasn't the cyclops's style. As much as he didn't like Fury, he knew that he wouldn't have the gall to pull this sort of bullshit. Howard didn't even entertain the thought of Tony doing this because Tony was doing something else. Among them managing to get impressive grades despite his excessive partying and drinking. The apple didn't fall too far from the tree, though sometimes Howard wished it would. When he did see Tony it was either pushing him to be better or lecturing him about something. Considering how rare those instances were, it was no surprise that Tony held some resentment to him. Glancing at the blinking pixel that wasn't meant to be seen, he sat quietly at his computer and then brought his fingers to the desk's surface where keyboard shaped keys glowed. Fingers typing away, he began to do some searches. What was opened, edited, modified, viewed, and so on. Files listed before him but most of them appeared to be what he had worked on. This wasn't the first time he'd done this and it wouldn't be the last, but someone was in his system and he wanted to know what they were doing in there. Whoever they were. He closed the window again and glanced at the screen. When he first started this habit it had been what he thought was inconsequential. Mostly just numbers of sales and that sort of information wasn't anything other than an economist might have interest in. An economist wouldn't go this far into his system just to look at some sales figures, would they? "Mr. Stark," Atha's voice came up again and Howard almost growled, "I said I was busy, Ms. Williams." "I understand, sir," she said, "but you have a meeting with the investors in ten minutes. You asked me to let you know." "Right," he said, "I'll be there shortly." 'Yes, Mr. Stark," Atha replied. Howard's mind mulled over what it could mean. An inkling of a suspicion came to his mind and he glanced at the clock. Nine minutes until the meeting. A meeting that he couldn't just wave off or reschedule. Irritably, he shut down his computer and walked away from his desk, making his way out of the office. The empty room sat quietly and then the computer woke seemingly on its own. As if it had taken new life, it began looking through files and digging, but at the same time erasing any footprints left behind. Files about the staff at the Stark School and the number of students there as well. Files about weapons innovations in the works and those currently in progress of being prepped for showing when Howard would be flying to Kabul to speak with some United States generals there. Another file opened up about Howard's car, inspecting the layout of it carefully. The brake system and the accelerator. Pausing for a moment, the file closed, its memory of being opened at all gone, and the computer shut off on its own again. Not a moment later Atha Williams walked into the office and placed a manila folder onto Mr. Stark's desk. It was blank on the cover with no mark on the side giving any clue as to its contents. A sticky-note was pressed against the front that said: The file you requested, Mr. Stark. |
