The award show was underway and Dazzler, Maroon 5 and Lorde were on stage doing a medley of their songs, Alison and Adam breaking in to duke it out in guitar battle, while Lorde provided the vocals. She swayed to the beat of the music, jamming on her infamous Paul Reed Smith, the one she had battled Johnny Guitar for and won. The song they were playing was loud, fierce and rocking, and Alison made it all that much better taping into her uncanny mutant ability to light up the stage, literally and figuratively. Light emanated from her body in flashing strobes, first white, then blue, then green. It swirled and morphed around the other players to suit the mood of the song, and then broke apart into a series of shapes, stars and diamonds before breaking apart further into a cascade of glowing glitter.
She only had a vague idea of what she was going to do, as it wasn't something she could rehearse necessarily, much to the chagrin of the directors and stage crews, but the effects were, well, in short, dazzling. Alison was absolutely in her element, and when the song they were playing concluded, after about ten minutes, the television cut to commercial.
The station logo flashed and dramatic music began to play.
"You have to help me." It was Quentin Beck's voice. Or rather his character Rory from CODE. It was a soundbite from last season that left off on a cliff hanger - Beck's character's fate hanging in the balance. In the last season it was unclear if Rory died or was an evil copy of Rory, the whole season predicated on the mystery if Rory would be evil or good.
"He's not who she says he is..."
"You have to believe me!"
"I'm being set up!"
"If you don't do what I say, everyone here will die!"
The images on screen flipped quickly between all of the cast members, music swelling dramatically each time.
"The battle for tomorrow has already begun and only one person can save them..."
"Rory... NO!"
There were images of Quentin's character again, this time he was holding a gun pointed right at the main love interest and when the screen went black gunshot fire could be heard.
"In two weeks, CODE returns to television in the most dramatic season yet."
After the break the award show returned to their logo and trill of music, the next set of presenters were on stage giving their spiel. "For the category of best new artist here are the nominees: James Blake, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Dazzler, Kacey Musgraves, Ed Sheeran," the camera flipped around to each nominee and when it got to Alison, she gave a wave. Once all the nominees were named, all five images were on screen. What the camera didn't show was Alison's death grip on Karolina Dean's hand while everyone waited in suspense for the winner to be named.
"And the winner is..."
"Dazzler!"
(Oh my GOD.) Alison could be seen mouthing the words to Karolina, who hugged her as they both stood up and a swell of excitement before dread set in. Oh crap, now she needed to make a speech. Alison didn't now what to do, or say, but that she just had to go up there and accept an award in front of who knew how many people gathered at the Staples Center and millions of other around the globe.
"Don't trip...don't trip... don't trip...don't forget to smile..." she kept repeating to herself over and over and over again as she made her way on stage.
"Oh my gosh...!" Alison said once she was on stage in front of the microphone, the Grammy Award shoved in her trembling hands. "I don't even know what to say...I can't believe I'm in the same room as Paul McCartney and Ringo Star... Oh my gosh. Thank you!"
All while Alison talked, errant sparkles loosened from her body and hung in the air, twinkling around her before fading from existence.
"I'm so fortunate to make an album that I poured my heart and soul into. To all the other nominees in this category, you guys are amazing! I just want to say thank you to everyone, the Academy, my dad, my gangy, my manager and agent, Eric Murphy, to the production team at Universal, to all my friends and family at the Xavier School, who supported me through everything. And I'm sorry I didn't do my homework... oh God." Alison shook her head, grinning like a fool. "Mutant pride and lots of love. Muah!" Alison flashed a peace sign, the music played and she was ushered off stage.
