At this precise moment, Peter really wished he stayed at Homecoming.
"Mother lover!" Peter grunted as he managed to avoid getting struck by the tail attached to the big green guy who took a love for the scorpiones order to a whole new level. Peter wasn't sure what to do with this guy because apparently he'd been looking for him in particular. What it was about putting on some spandex and a mask that brought all the crazies out of the woodwork to attack him, Peter couldn't tell you. He already had to deal with Quentin as it was, and while this guy was no Norman Osborn, he was still proving to be a hell of a fight.
If Peter stayed at Homecoming, he would have probably spent the night wishing Gwen was there, but he'd be able to hang out with Bobby, Amadeus, and Harry. But no, he decided to go through with his plan in a way. He went, was crowned, and then he left after the dance. He didn't say bye to anyone because he knew they would hassle him into stay and man, Peter really didn't want to stay. Now, yeah, only now he was being attacked by a guy in a scorpion suit, did he realize that Homecoming really wasn't all that bad. Even if he was there stag.
Peter crawled along a wall and leapt as another spray of venom splattered onto the wall, barely missing him. Part of Peter's suit already had a hole from where he was splashed and he also had a lovely burn there. It hurt, but it was work past the pain or get hit and be in even more pain.
"You know, there's a joke about Arachnids somewhere in here," Peter said, "and I'm just having a hard time figuring it out. You know, there aren't any jokes about scorpions, you ever wonder why?"
"Shut up!" Scorpion, as he introduced himself, said, "And die!"
"Looks, I get it, spiders are cool, and your codename and costume need a little work. And I know that people just see scorpions as a mix of lobsters, wasps, spiders, and nightmares, but that's not reason to take it out on—yow!" Peter dodged again and this time landed on the ground before the guy.
"Can I at least know what the heck I did to get you all riled up?" Peter asked and the man growled, "No."
"Really? You're not going to monologue or anything? Just, 'no'? Wow, you didn't read the super villain handbook, did you?" Peter frowned though it couldn't be seen by the fact that his mask covered his face. He was crawling along the floor, trying to find a good time to jump in and apparently his attempts to coerce the guy into at least talking more wasn't working because now he was hunched over and that damn tail of his was poised and ready to strike.
Okay, Pete. You can do this. You can do this…
They stood there, staring at each other like some sort of weird Mexican standoff. Peter started whistling the all familiar tune, because well, he seemed appropriate.
Then came that split second. That moment and the back of his head throbbed as the tingling warned him of what was to come and Peter had to figure out how to act in that horribly brief amount of time. The tail snapped forward, crackling with electric energy and smashed into the floor, but Peter was already gone. He'd leaped up and flipped, landing on the villain's back and he wrapped an arm around his neck, pulling him into a choke hold. The man stood up, swinging around and trying to get his tail to snap at Spider-man, but it also ran the risk of hitting himself, and Peter knew that.
Reaching around, the Scorpion grasped onto Peter's arms and began to squeeze. Peter wasn't prepared for the amount of strength he had in his hands and his hold loosened enough that the man could grab him and throw him. Peter flew and reacted with enough time to stick to the wall instead of crash into it. He wasn't looking to get all up close and personal with the wall, even if someone had graffitied the spider-symbol from his uniform there.
Peter realized that talking wasn't going to do him any good and did Scorpion the favor by indeed, shutting up. He didn't stick to the wall long because he decided to take the assault this time. He jumped on the ground and then acted like he was going to leap up again, but instead crawled forward quickly, racing and then punching his fist upward to strike at the Scorpion's chin. It sent him flying up this time and landing back and Peter followed through by jumping down at him and striking him hard again.
There came a flurry of punches and the Scorpion was trying to fight back, but after almost a year and a half of rigorous training with Wong, Peter had a better idea of how to fight and how to make his hits count. The acid splashed at him again, a few drops hitting his chest and he cringed but swung anyway and then flipped back, kicking the Scorpion as he did.
The other man was in something of a daze now, Peter's frenzied attack had thrown him off and he'd knocked his head around enough to disorient him. He tried to stand up, but turned a little and Peter leaped onto the man's tail, using whatever strength he could muster to try to pull the tail off or at least break it. He began striking hard at it, but it was made of a strong material and he was only starting to wear it down when he felt the Scorpion turn hard in order to throw him off.
Peter used this to his advantage instead. He began shooting webbing, wrapping it around the guy several times over, layer after layer and then wrapping his face as well, leaving space for his mouth and nose to allot for breathing. It might not work for long, but Peter just needed him tied up for just a minute in order to do what he wanted to do. The Scorpion struggled against the webbing, straining it but there were enough layers it might take him a few tries to get through all of them. Meanwhile, Peter had the Scorpion in a headlock again, cutting off his air supply and the Scorpion was tumbling forward. He was trying to strike at Peter but he was starting to lose consciousness.
Panting hard, Peter held on tight, eyes closed, hoping that this would work. The man's body went limp and Peter immediately let go. He reached and pulled the guy's mask off. He looked vaguely familiar. He'd seen him around the office at the Bugle.
Weird.
Pressing two fingers to the man's throat, Peter felt a wave of relief wash over him. The guy wasn't dead. Just unconscious.
Sirens could be heard, and Peter figured that someone must have called the cops on what was happening. It wasn't like they were fighting in a part of town that was empty. A few people were shouting at him.
"Fuck yeah, Spider-man!" one said and another, "Stop making so much noise, goddammit, people are tryin' to sleep here!" There would always be that one New Yorker that would complain about the noise, but at least he wasn't cheering for the Scorpion. The police arrived and came out of the car, looking at Spider-man and then at the Scorpion wrapped up on the ground. Peter webbed the tail tip after breaking off the mechanism that allowed it to shoot acid. The less this guy was armed, the better.
"You need a medic, Spider-man?" one of the officers Peter frequently conversed with as Spider-man asked and Peter shook his head, "No, I'll be fine. The guy, be careful. I know I said it already but really, I got lucky."
"We will," the officer said, "What happened?"
"I don't know," Peter confessed, "I really don't know."
"You know who he is?" came the next question and Peter shook his head, "No. Just...be careful. Really."
"We will, Spider-man," the officer nodded, "I guess it's a good thing that Chief Stacy's girl went to Florida. First that Goblin guy, then Mysterio and now him? Man, this city is just getting worse."
Peter nodded slowly, "Yeah...good thing. See you around, Arnie." He jumped up and started swinging off before the officer could say his good-bye. He hadn't thought about how this fight tonight might have affected Gwen. Sure, he knew the symbiote was still out there, somewhere, and he knew that Quentin knew he was Spider-man, but Peter also knew that Quentin was Mysterio. Norman was behind bars, but tonight…
Tonight taught him a lot about this path he'd chosen. As much as he missed Gwen, as much as he loved her, he knew that this guy might be the first of many. Peter didn't think Spider-man to be a big enough hero to really get himself a Rogue gallery the likes that characters like the Flash or Batman had, but tonight made him realize it might be. Enemies came with this decision, and he knew he couldn't just quit. Even if it was putting him at risk, he knew that if it wasn't him getting attacked, it might be someone else. He had to fight and do right by his Uncle Ben.
Even if it meant sacrificing what he had with Gwen.
It wasn't like he was going to break-up with her, though they both sort of did that when they made each other promise not to miss a good thing when it came. Peter knew that it was more likely for that to happen for Gwen than him, and in the end, it'd make her happy and it'd keep her safe. So he'd take the distance for what it offered him. A chance to move on and a chance for Gwen to live a nice long life that she deserved.
