Scott slowed a bit, feeling his pulse starting to pound. He was jealous of her ability to keep going, but not in a personal way. At least he was getting back to his former self again, slowly but surely.
He took a larger breath, trying to relax the muscles in his jaw and the pressure in his upper head. Running eventually brought the migraines around his eyes back, and he could already feel one coming on.
He didn't want to answer the question, because any answer was making thin his agreement with Remy. She even gave him an out. The problem Scott had was impossible. He was of two philosophies, both of which conflicted with each other. One was operational security. What he was doing was likely going to violate school rules before long, and the more people that knew about it, the more chances there were of being exposed. It also, conceptually, kept the rest of the students safe and gave the Professor and staff plausible deniability if Scott's efforts ever ended up pitting him against authorities like SHIELD.
The other philosophy, one he'd come to terms with with his best friend, Jean-- was you didn't lie to your friends. When Scott made the leap to friendship with Anna in the garage, that was his only intent. He wasn't looking to recruit her, but he also wasn't looking to lie or live some sort of double life. All that would do is undermine a friendship, even if so far he'd managed to not tell Jean about what he was doing either. He was happy she and John were focused on graduating and moving with their lives, and if that distracted her from Scott's behavior, all the better.
So which was it going to be?
He glanced in her direction. Scott looked her up and down, figuring out what he could. Despite her time in the Brotherhood, he trusted her. She understood better than most the cost of being a mutant. Rogue also wasn't exactly the biggest fan of authority, and had unique skills that made her perfect for his team.
That was the problem. Haroun already knew, and he wanted in. Even if protection was an illusion, that was what Remy wanted for Haroun and Anna. What exactly had happened between Remy and Anna, he didn't know, but both being outsiders did make for common ground.
Maybe it was the run, the endorphins and the sense of pushing ahead somewhat blindly to an unseen end. Maybe it was that he found himself enjoying her company and not wanting to lose a friend when he had so few-- but Scott wanted to tell her. "I'll tell you," he finally said. "But it puts me in an awkward position. I have a secret I mean to keep, and while I believe I can trust you, secrets are a burden."
The migraine was coming on now, so he slowed to a stop. Scott caught his breath, then removed the visor, keeping his eyes closed as he massaged his temples. "Do you still want to know?"
