Though Alex had been looking forward to this day for a variety of reasons, the main reason for the trip out of town was always in the back of his mind. Alex had been hoping to get back in touch with his father. He'd tried to call him a few times over the past month, but hadn't had any luck reaching him. It wasn't unusual for his father to disappear for a while on work-related trips, but Alex hadn't been given a heads up about it this time. The timing wasn't great, as Alex had some important question to ask his dad, things that had been bothering him since he'd been enrolled at Stark's school. Alex had questions about his abilities and why he had them. To his surprise, he had found out he wasn't a mutant, but he wasn't sure what that did make him. He'd been hoping to find out.
The trip to Dover, New Jersey hadn't taken long at all. It wasn't far at all from New York City, just a short train ride, followed by a brief bus ride. Alex was glad that Phil, Robbie, Herc and Maria had taken him up on his invitations to come with. After seeing his dad, they'd planned to go up to the shore and see some of the sights there before returning to the school. They arrived in Dover at about half past ten. The walk from the bus stop to the apartment building that Alex had called home was a short one, and Alex once again had attempted calling his father on the way there, getting the same voice mail message he'd heard before. He couldn't leave a message because of the voice mail box being full, something else that had bothered Alex. Wherever his father was, he wasn't even checking his messages. That wasn't like him.
Alex's building was in an older part of town where residential houses and apartment buildings stood on the same street as several businesses. Across from the apartment building was an old playground, the equipment old and faded. Alex led them in the building and up to his apartment on the second floor. He knocked distinctively on the door, knowing his father would recognize the knock as his if he were home. As it turned out, he wasn't. Alex invited his friends in as he took a look around. Alex found the place clean but a little dusty, looking unlived in for a while. The refrigerator was near empty, no food that was immediately perishable still in it. He checked the house phone, finding no messages or recent call history on it. Other than that, it looked like the same old apartment. Small table and a couple of chairs in the kitchen, living room sparsely furnished and half taken over with exercise equipment. A short hallway led to a bathroom and two bedrooms. Alex peeked inside his dad's room, finding it clean and empty like the rest of the place. He spent a few minutes in his room, filling a gym bag with a few more of his things to bring back with him to the school.
He still felt worry for his dad as they caught a bus for the shore, but he pushed his concerns away for a while. Now was the time to enjoy being out of the school and away from Manhattan. Alex felt a little excitement build as they rode on toward the shore. Though it was late in the season, the boardwalks would still be open and the beaches available. A few of the shops on the boardwalks might still be open, a few food places too, maybe even one of the arcades. He didn't know if the Ferris wheel or any of the other rides would still be going, he'd have to see when they got there.
Soon enough they were there, getting off the bus a block from the boardwalk. The air smelled of the sea and the gulls could be heard cawing loudly. "Where to first?", he asked, knowing he should give choices as he was probably more familiar with the shore that the rest of them. "There's this awesome pizza place here, slices of pizza as long as your arm. We could head there if you're hungry." Breakfast had been a while ago by now. "Or we could check out the shops, maybe see if the arcade's up and running."
